What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The reason I asked this question was because I had my gallbladder out several years ago.. So I had the diarrhea thing for several years... I had this problem BEFORE I had it taken out. I've had this problem since then as well. But I was watching a program on tv, Mystery Diagnosis, and saw a woman on there that had this problem also. Her diagnosis was Haab Syndrome and her doctor put her on a medication for cholesterol. As Im already on cholesterol medicine, I thought I'd ask my dr. about changing mine to this medication. I figured if it didn't work, I didn't have anything to lose. That everything would just stay the same. lol.. But figured it was worth a try. I'm so very glad I did.. I can actually go out to eat and not have to worry about how far I was from the restrooms or have to hurry home after we ate. I just didn't go out to eat. So if you are having this problem, you may want to ask your doctor about giving it a try. Its kind of expensive but well worth it to me. I wish I'd known about this YEARS ago. You can check out the site if youre interested ... www.haabsyndrome.com I think it is. I hope this can help others like it has helped me.

Thank you so much for the info and I will look into this immediately! I have suffered with this since my twenties...then my gallbladder was removed in '95 and it has completely taken over my life. For the past 15 yrs. I have even refused to go to social events at friends houses to avoid the embarrassment after we ate! Is it the same medication for everyone and do you need to see a gastroenterologist specialist?

I find that if I start my day with white toast it makes the rest of the day much better.

I had mine out 2 1/2 years ago and still have issues occasionally.

Yes very normal. It gets worse if you eat a meal high in fat. I had mine removed over 3 years ago and I still get diarrhea or very soft stools on a regular basis. It's also worse with certain kinds of coffee.

Good to know, Thank you!

~I had mine taken out in '08 and I still have issues...salad and sometimes coffee and ALL the time eggs! It sure would be nice to not have stomach pains and have to run to the bathroom 20 mins after eating!

I have IBS on top of getting my gallbladder out. my doctor called it post cholecystectomy syndrome. and she told me it can last up to 6-8 years after you get it removed. its hell between that and my IBS i rarely have a normal bowel movement. Good luck, you're normal. just be careful of what you eat. if its high in fat and stuff it will make you go faster. also some people have that problem with roughage too. good luck!

The Habba Syndrome symptoms fit me remarkably well. Thanks so much for posting this.

I've begun to avoid eating when I don't know if a bathroom will be handy within the next 20-30 minutes, and have suspected gallbladder problems. Since I pay a criminally high insurance premium that has also a criminally high yearly deductible of $7000, I've avoided taking this problem to the doc, expecting too many expensive and uncomfortable tests to manage on my small income. Your post may have helped me cut through all that!

Here's a very informative link on this syndrome. Readers should also scroll down and take in the responses to the article – lots of good tips there: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-habba-syndrome.htm .

Thank you, thank you, thank you for J., D!

VERY common side effect. :) It's different for eveyrone how long the diarrhea will last. Mine was only for a day (lucky me!) My monther-in-law was 6 months. Father in law for a year. It is normal though so even though it sucks, there's nothing "wrong" as far as that. Good luck! :)
