Gall Bladder Update Part 3 - Cuba,MO

So I went to the doctor as you all advised. He was concerned about my pain and random throwing up a few weeks ago. I had a u/s this morning and it showed nothing. So now the doctor wants to do a hidi scan to check the function of my gall bladder. The problem is I don't want to pay for it. I 'm not even sure it is necessary since the u/s showed nothing. He is giving me some medicine for my nausea that I have every night. I would like to go from there and see what happens. Is this reasonable? Would you go ahead and do the hidi scan? The u/s cost me $1100 out of pocket this morning (payment plan of course). I just don't want to owe a bunch of money to the hospital that I can't pay back.

What can I do next?

Are you still having the pain? Maybe eat the cleanest diet that you can that is appropriate for Gall bladder problems and see if it helps you.

Wow-that is a LOT of money! I feel for you. Esp since there was nothing to show for it-but I guess thats what you want :-)

That's a tough one. Ultrasound can miss stones. I had an ultrasound right before my emergency gall bladder removal that showed many stones, but when they got in there were more than triple the amount they expected. On the other hand, it may not be your gallbladder and you will have to pay a lot. What does your doctor want you to do? The pain and nausea sound a lot like gallbladder, and vomiting with a gall bladder issue means it's more advanced (if that's what the issue is) Can you get a second opinion? Something is causing your pain and nausea and you need to get to the root of the problem. Good luck, listen to your doc.

I had u/s after u/s for yrs that showed nothing. Finally had a test to show the function of my gb. It was not good! I ended up getting gb removed & haven't had pain since!

I don't know much about gall bladders, just know several people that have had theirs taken out, seeming like the Dr's were grasping at straws with a few. I do know from other peple that when they are acting up they are painful. I understand the money issue with healthcare. If somebody told me I had to pay $1100 out of pocket (payment plan or not) I wouldn't be able to have it done. Have you tried consulting a chiropractor? I would only go to one that maybe someone you know can recommend. They are far more reasonable than regular healthcare & accupuncture (along with other things) can tell you alot & help reduce alot of symptoms. It's just a thought for an alternative to the traditional costly healthcare we put up with everyday. Hope you feel better soon!

I did the hidi scan and everything came back normal. I was getting sick every few weeks with throwing up and stomach pain. I haven't gotten sick for about two months, still don't know what was causing it.

I don't know if this will help at all but before I had my gall bladder out, I had an ultrasound that looked completely normal. Then they did the hidascan and found that my gall bladder was only working at 2% and that's why it was causing me so much trouble! My insurance paid for it though so I didn't have to base my decision on that. I'm sorry! :o/ I hope you start feeling better!

U/s don't show much with gall bladders unless the stones are large and obvious. The hidi scan is where they inject radioactive dye into your blood stream and wait for it to reach your gall bladder. Then they take a scan (not u/s) to see if the dye goes in one end and out the other of the gall bladder to see if it is blocked at all. It is very detailed and I got to see the whole thing, it was pretty cool. For me it showed a completly blocked gall bladder hence the severe vomitting, pain and emergency surgery. Find out the cost but if it were me I would get the scan. $1100 for an u/s seems a bit outrageous to me but I'm sure the hidi scan would be much more. Can you check other hospitals for cost or are you tied to one hospital because of insurance reasons?

I have a friend that had every test possible and still showed nothing. And they didnt believe her until they had to do emergency surgery.
