Frequent Periods

I had my third child in October 2009. In December 2009, I had an IUC put in. Had a pap smear done then and it was normal. Everything was fine, got my period and it was normal looking. But, for the past 2 months, I am getting my period every 2 weeks and it's very brown and mucous-y looking, not to be gross. And it typically lasts 1 week or longer, where my periods before usually only lasted 4 days. I will call my OB on Monday, but am looking for some direction in questioning the OB. What could this be? Does the IUC have anything to do with it? I have had 2 ovarian cysts in the past, could it be cysts again? Any advice would be wonderful!

What can I do next?

M., I had a Mirena for almost a year. I'm not sure if that's the IUC you have or not, but I have read many posts about experiences with it. I think it is common to have abnormal bleeding with the IUC--as in continual, spotting, heavier, lighter, none, etc. Ideally, the IUC is supposed to make your periods really light and monthly. I was breastfeeding with mine, so I barely ever bled at all after the first month. But I have read of other women's experiences that have bled a lot--frequency and flow-wise. The consistency of your blood sounds a little weird, but that is for your doc to answer. I know that my former OB and her nurse commented that most of the unique experiences were 'normal'--meaning the IUC is capable of a wide variety of reactions. But, just like any other hormonal BC, it works different for everyone. You may need to try something else (if there's nothing else that seems to be causing issues). I hope you get some answers!

It could be uterine fibroids. Those cause extensive bleeding and more frequent and longer periolds. Just a suggestion to ask her/him about.

M.,
I had an IUD put in after my daughter was born. The exact same thing happened to me. I was constantly bleeding this weird blood and then I would have my "real" period, which was 10x worse than what it normally was. I only had about 1 week of no blood. I thought it was the hormones from when I was pregnant, but it continued for a year. I called my OB and they told me that its just not compatible with my body. I had it remove and FINALLY have just a normal period.
So with all that said, I think you might want to call and make sure everything is ok. but if you keep it in, most likely you will continue to have this problem. I'm only saying this b/c this is what my OB told me.

Good luck,
V.

M., ask your ob about endometrial ablation. Maybe it's ablasion. Look it up on www.WebMd.com I was in my mid-40s when I started having my period, and it just didn't end...or if it did, it was only for a few days, then it would start back up. (No IUD involved!) Anyway, it effectively ends your period for many women. I'm not a dr, so I won't go into the causes of your period, and how this procedure may work for you, but just a thought! It worked for me beautifully! It's an out-patient procedure...anyway, write it down and ask about it!
