My son had the same problem and his dr. finally realized that he needed to have some spots cauterized (not as big a deal as it sounds) and that helped a lot! Still got them but not as often and usually not as bad.
Hey all,
My almost 5 year old is always getting bloody noses. It seems like at least once a month she gets one. This month it has happened twice in a weeks time. She just had a pretty bad one, blood all over the place!
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this. I was going to wait until her 5 year well check up to speak to her doctor about this. It's in August so I figured a few more months wouldn't hurt. Should I be more worried?
I thought maybe she was picking her nose too much or something, which has been the case a few times. She's honest with me when I ask her and she'll say yes if she was picking but most of the time she says she wasn't picking and that it just happened. She had one in school last week that had started out of no where. He teacher said they sat down on the carpet for a story and all of a sudden she had blook trickling out of her nose.
I would like to say it's just allergies or a cold but it happend SO OFTEN!
Can anyone tell me what I may be dealing with?
Thanks in advance!

My son had the same problem at 8, they started off once on a while then once a month then once a week, I was going crazy. Then we went and saw a ENT doctor. He suggested catherization. So he had that done, and he hasn't had a big one snice. He does still have a dribble here and there but nothing more than a blood vessel breaking through when you blow your nose. Doctor wasn't sure why just that the blood vessels were too close to the surface of the inside of the nose. Sometimes just a slight bump and sometimes nothing, or just leaning over too far for too long would be the cause. At least there is help out there, go see an ENT doctor for his opinion.
My son has a similar issue. His nose bleeds when his body temperature gets to high or if the air is too dry. I have made sure that he stays hydrated, rests when needed and as Stacy B. recommended, we try the Vaseline in winter or when the air is too dry.
I've learned not to panic because it only causes him to panic. We calmly get tissue. He knows to sit down, pinch the area in the center of his nostrils and lean forward until he feels it clot. The quicker this is done, the shorter the bleed.
Another possibility is a condition that my nieces and nephews all have and inherited from their grandfather. It has a name which I can not recall but it is a thinning of the blood and it is difficult for their blood to clot. This makes them much more susceptable to bloody noses. Just a thought to maybe ask your Dr about.
My child has been having bloody noses quite frequently during the last 3 weeks. During the day or night, it doesn't matter. My son will come into our bedroom crying that his nose is bleeding. And I'm not talking small stuff either. I've done quite a bit of laundering of pillowcases these last few weeks. When I called my pediatrician, he said that right now it's very common because the air is actually really dry. He suggested that I go out a buy a tube of Ocean Nasal Gel (picture found here: http://flemingpharma.com/content/view/51/62/ ) and apply it very gently using a Qtip to the inside of his nose. If that didn't help it within a few weeks, then he was going to look into it further to rule out other issues. So far, the gel seems to be doing it's job. Maybe you might want to try it as well. Also, I got my son to admit that the inside of his nose itches (because it's dry) and when he puts his finger there, the bleeding starts up too. So for me, it's a combination of dryness and a finger so far. Good luck!!
One of my kids had tis issue but I think the circumstances are very different. She was 4, we had just moved to Colorado Springs. The alititude took some getting used to and there is very little humidity....30% was considered high humidity. A far cry from our usual 75-85% here in Michigan. I did give her more vitamin C and that seemed to help.
I used to get them a lot if the air was too dry... We used to live in an older home. We moved to a new house (brand new construction) about 2 years ago and I haven't had trouble since. Maybe try a humidifier at night?
This happend to me throughout my entire childhood, and I even get them once in a while as an adult just not as bad...there is probably nothing wrong, I would wait till the check up...It is possible she has a broken bloode vessel in her nose but if that were the case she would be getting them more often than twice a month,,,its frusterating I know but make sure you are keeping a really good humidifier in her room all day and night, when her nose is bleeding have her pinch it HARD right below the bone, sometimes a cold wash cloth on her forhead or the back of her neck helps, DONT lean forward or blow! have her sit up in a chair or against the wall....
My three year old son has the same problem. I took him to the doctor and she said to put vaseline on the inside of his nose twice a day and it worked like a charm. I did it for about a week and then he quit having them. So, now whenever he gets them I just start the vaseline thing again. She said his nose was really dry on the inside and thats what caused it. Hope this helps!
M.,
I'm not trying to be the alarmist here, but you should be aware that, occasionally, this can be serious. My sister had this issue as a young child. Turned out it was due to high blood pressure which was a symptom of her then undetected kidney disease.
Now the other side of the coin. Many years later, two of my four kids had major bloody nose issues during their younger years. When it first happened, I panicked remembering all my sister's issues. I consulted the doctor and, with them, it was really nothing. They're teenagers now and, to this day, they can still get a "gusher" - sometimes for no reason at all. I guess some kids are just more prone to it.
I would definitely mention it at your daughter's next check up. It can be a symptom of something more serious, but if she's healthy overall, it's probably just something she'll have to learn to deal with like my kids have.
Regards, L.
Lots of kids get nose bleeds. There are measures that you can take to help with it. I am sure that your Dr. has filled you in by now. No worries. My son has had them for years!

Hi M., How frustrating for you and your little one!
How long has this been going on?
What does your doctor say about vitamins for her?
warmly,
M.
I remember my mom talking about how my older brother had the same problem. Ok, this was 35 years ago.... His pediatrician at the time said that he needed to drink liquid jello because the gelatin would help thicken his blood and the bloody noses would begin to cease. I don't know whether that is true or not but he did eventually stop having so many bloody noses. You might want to talk with a pediatrician about it.
