My pediatrician told me many years ago that 1-2 colds per month is typical. It gets better the older they get.
Hello! How often do generally healthy active toddlers get sick over the course of one Fall/Winter season? My daughter is not in day care but is involved regularly in classes and playgroups. She doesn't get too sick: generally a cold with an eventual fever. I am just curious as to how many times is typical.

My 19 month old kids have rarely been sick. They are not in daycare. We have a nanny. They have each had a fever exactly once for 1 hour each! They havent had a runny nose or a cold for over a year. I didnt breastfeed for long at all so in our case that is not why they are so healthy. I never get sick either, so it may be genetics and a good immune system. We also give them vitamins and a mostly organic diet. No sweets. No red meat or pork either. Once child refuses all meat and is a natural vegetarian. It is not effecting their height as they are both over 90th percentile. I think diet may influence health!
Hi Barbara,
The word I have gotten from most of my daycare families is a cold about once a month and two to three viruses besides colds. I have found the cold part of that to be pretty true. Even though your daughter is not in daycare, I'd guess that she is still in line with that since classes and regular playgroups are still consistent contact with a number of other kids.... It probably also depends on how old your daughter is, how often you practice good hand washing and whether or not she's a thumb/finger sucker.
Good luck! Stay well!
On average, I'd say my kids get sick about 3x a winter/fall season. My kids are 6,4,2 and each of them has only had a fever once....wait the oldest has had 2 fevers in his whole life...so far!
Hi Barbara, my daughter is almost two and a half and she's never had a ear infection (although her pediatrician treated her with antibiotics as a preemptive measure once which I now realize is ridiculous). When she does have a cold they are mild and infrequent. A couple times she had a fever with barely any cold symptoms that lasted two days. We participate in playgroups, gymnastics, storytimes, etc almost every day too. I nursed her until she was just over 2 years old - I wonder if that has anything to do with it. What about you?
