Hi, for all of you french bulldog owners, do you have pet insurance? I'm wondering if we should get it, since FB can often have health issues. What are your average pet bills a year for your dog? If you're happy with a specific insurance, what is it?

Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

It doesn't hurt to call different companies around and check it out. The problem with French Bulldogs: they have lots of breed predispositions. Up to and including skin issues, dental issues, allergy issues. And a lot of insurance companies have exclusions for breed predispositions. Here in Texas we are swamped with allergies and so I have seen several Frenchies with allergy related illnesses (skin/ear infections, eye infections from drainage). Most Frenchies will be over a year old before they start to have any problems so it is wise to get the insurance before they have issues. I have seen it both ways though - I have seen some with several problems and some without.

Some pet insurance have different plans available too so the best thing to do is call around and see what they offer. Be prepared to pay out of pocket up front for any care needed because pet insurance is based on reimbursement. You pay up front to your vet and then send in the claim and they reimburse you.

As far as average vet bills it is going to be largely based on the area you live in. Different parts of the country have vastly different prices so the cost is relative to that area.

I love Frenchies myself and I would love to own one but I too would be looking at the prospect of Pet Insurance if I did.

Considering I just spend $2,000 on my little Papillion for a sudden thing I think insurance for pets is a great thing. A little late for this one, but next time I am getting it for sure.

We have a 4 year old french bulldog. We didn't buy insurance as it doesn't cover everything anyways and we got our dog from reputable breeder so we didn't have any major issues (knock on the wood). We go to vet who is known for specializing in bulldogs. In general, I have noticed that our vet bills are higher then for other dog owners that I checked with but i think it has to do with clinic that we are using but my husband is just refuses to see other vets. But in general, the bill is about 150 or so for each visit and we don't go very often. This is just my 2 cents.

Hi there! We are Frenchie owners and have honestly never thought about needing Pet insurance.... Ours is about 1.5 yrs old and has never had any problems... yearly cost would be just the normal shots each year and check ups! So far so good for us without the insurance! Enjoy your Frenchie! They rock!!!
