Hi Ladies,

For so long, I have wanted a fountain for the front of our home, but being a SAHM I could never justify the cost. Last Mother's Day, my wonderful hubby surprised me with a lovely fountain and it really looks beautiful. What a guy... However, this thing is a pain in the @$$. It grows mold, the water gets scummy and the birds just love pooping all over it. Now that spring is here, it's time to fire up the fountain again and I'm dreading another summer of figuring out how to care for this thing!

Does anyone have any ideas for maintaining a fountain?! Thank you, thank you for any help you have!

What can I do next?

Maybe putting in a birdbath with a feeder for birds will keep them out of your fountain. You might go to a Nursery and ask all the questions you have, they M. even have a 'class' about creating a fountain space.

I love our fountain, but does take some maintenance. I usually just get some of the pool algecide at Walmart and throw in a little bit once a week or so. I don't really have a schedule, I just look at it. I also bought a little fish net, like for a fish tank, to help me keep leaves and things out. For whatever reason, bird poop really isn't an issue. If you have some plants/shrubs around the fountain with berries or a food source that may be one reason why they are hanging out. Well that and that it is a water source.
Enjoy.
