I can't believe I am asking this but I need help! My husband has become very athletic/healthy eater over the last year. Great for him. However, he lets out foul, foul farts and I cannot take it. He apologizes but says it's normal for athletes. I can't stand the lingering stench of my bedroom and am considering sleeping in the spare BR b/c he does it in his sleep too. I went on a rage about how disgusted I am and he claims he will see a doctor. Any advice????????

Thanks

What can I do next?

Has he started drinking protein shakes? I know some people that work-out a lot and are trying to build up muscle do. And then they stink!!! Bad breath, foul sweat & smelly bottoms. He can try different brand shakes or drink them less often. Or stop them completely! If he is not going to be competing in Mr. Universe they are not necessary anyway!

Good luck.

Oh I feel your pain, although my husband doesn't eat healthy. He's just always had gassier tendencies than most people. I often wake up due to it. awful. I don't have a suggestion for how to stop it, but when my husband starts doing it around us and not leaving the room I pull out flowery room sprays that I know he hates (I'm not fond of them either). One spray sets him on track to realize that everyone has sensitivities to smells. Ceiling fans help too. I'll keep reading hoping someone has a good suggestion!

Beano..."take beano before & there will beano gas", is their slogan. Gas x works great too, although, I prefer Walmart brand, much cheaper.

Sometimes healthy foods really can make you toot pretty bad. Strawberries used to really mess w/ me, and when my husband was being onry, I'd tease him that I was going to go eat some strawberries, lol! :)

Adding yogurt to his diet might help decrease the gassiness and even out his gut. Healthy diet shouldn't produce foul gas that grosses you out.

Good luck!!

I agree it's the change in his diet. It would be nice if he left the room, but that doesn't help the farts in his sleep. If he will eat probiotics like yogurt and it stops the problem, great. It might not be enough though. I disagree that all soy causes the problem - SOME soy can aggravate it or be hard to digest, but only if it's not high quality or if it's processed in alcohol or other substance that causes the problem. The price of the soy is not the indicator of it's quality or level of contamination by chemicals. Does he take protein shakes or eat protein-type bars?? If he takes Reliv shakes, they are rapidly digested and working at the cellular level in 20 minutes - www.reliv.com, then go to essential nutrition. He may also need to add the digestive health product to stabilize what's in his stomach and intestines - the product has many digestive enzymes and herbs that settle things out, and helps people with all kinds of digestive issues, including IBS and Crohn's Disease, really serious things. I'd be happy to help you more - the website is huge and designed really for distributors or people being guided thru to key areas that affect them. There are great clinical trials by the company too and they are really ethical and top notch. Happy to help you more if you like. We've all be soon healthy, have not been sick, and both my son and husband are athletes (my son is a track 'star') and they do not have the problem your husband has. I also work with personal trainers and coaches - they don't have this problem.

There is something called "Body Mint" which was invented by people in my State!

Here is the link:
http://www.bodymint.com/

Its great! Even celebrities use it.

In my State, they sell it at Longs Drug stores or CVS....

Um yes, have him fart elsewhere... the air quality in your home when he farts is probably real air "pollution" LOL

all the best,
Susan

Believe it or not beano does wonders. Have him keep a diary and try to pinpoint the worst offenders, maybe he can switch them out with some just as healthy but less offensive.

Unless he changes his diet, there's not much you can do unless you ask him to let his farts out outside and keep air freshner with you all the time. I have the same problem with my husband, except he thinks it's funny to let a silent but deadly one out, hold me, and make me suffer :( ugh. as for sleeping, i keep a seperate blanket, as it contains a good portion of it. i make sure he's wrapped up in it and usually i can make it through without smelling it...

I agree with lots of the posts you've already recieved - something he is eating is not agreeing with him. Probiotics may help - I take a powder (New Chapter's All Flora but there are MANY brands - personally I take 1/4 t mixed in with a small glass of water daily).

I used to let out stink bombs, too - turns out it was wheat! I was allergic and could not digest it. When I cut out the wheat, no more stinky gas! The beano may help but it would be better if he figured out what was CAUSING the gas in the first place.

Smelly gas is not normal for anyone - it is a sign of digestive problems.

Something else that might help is baking soda - instructions are on the side of the package (I tried that once, but it tastes gross).. I much prefer the probiotics - they help the gut from the inside out! Yogurt daily might help as might Kefir and other fermented products.

BTW, not all doctors are trained in nutrition...

Good Luck!

Its his diet. Usually leafy, green veggies and foods high in fiber will cause the bacteria in our bowels to become more active (which is healthy) but it also causes the stink bombs.

There's really nothing you can do about it. I'd suggest asking him to please leave the room to do it, and keeping Febreeze or Glade handy.

Good luck! At least you know he's healthy! Its when a person DOESN'T go regularly, or do anything active or healthy that you should be worried. This way at least you know he's not cruising for a heart attack!

since his diet has changed for healthier, this will be normal for a while, but his intestinal tract will get used to it and they will become less disgusting

I don't think farts are really standard parts of healthy diet or behavior. Look into what he might have a food allergy to that he's eating. Gut damage is a common source of gas.

It's interesting to me how most men find this funny, and most women find it disgusting. My husband is similar, and actually, it happens to me now and then. My doctor recommended Gas-X, which is simethecone, and it works really well. Whenever I have gas, I take two, and it pretty much takes care of the problem. Getting my husband to take it is a different story - he considers farting a sign of good health, which it may be, but like you say, it's pretty offputting.

Activated Charcoal capsules can be found in the supplements section of the pharmacy. It really works wonders. Some fiber tablets might help, too.

Hmmm...when we have beef in our diet (which is rare), any outgassing is really smelly. Have him keep track of his food for a week or two to see what might be the worst offender in his diet.

I disagree that this is normal for athletes. There is something in his diet that causing this, and an imbalance of gut flora will cause the odor. You can help fix that with probiotics or probiotic foods like yogurt, kefir, or lacto-fermented foods like sauerkraut. Keeping a food journal is the best way to find your culprit. Look particularly at luncheon meats and meats containing nitrates. Those power bars do it to me every time too (I think it's the soy protein isolates, which are horribly difficult for the body to digest). If he's doing the protein drinks, he might want to find another source of protein. Anti-gas herbs would be things like fennel seed and ginger. It would be better to introduce these into the diet than to go for a pill. Antacids will actually change gut ph and can contribute to new food allergies over time.
