Formula Question

I just stopped nursing and started feeding my 7 1/2 month old daughter, Michelle, soy formula. She loves it so it's been an easy transition. Sometimes I'll hear her wake up so I'll go mix some formula and get it all warmed up and ready, then she falls back asleep. How long is this formula I've already mixed up good for? I would think it's good for longer than regular formula since it's soy and not real dairy. I'm realizing how expensive formula is and when she doesn't eat it, I am throwing it out. I was just wondering what you moms have done... how long you feel comfortable still using it after you've mixed it up, what you've been told by the doctor, etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated even from moms who have advice about regular formula made with cow's milk. Thank you in advance!!

What can I do next?

Hi V.,
I was told by my midwife that you can refridgerate it for up to 10 hours and it can sit out for up to but no longer than 4 hours and it keeps fine. This is true only with soy formula, I don't know about dairy formula.
A little about me:
I am a 30 year old with a 12 month old boy. I am also a massage therapist and about to begin some part time work out of my home. I am new to the area and am a little hesitant because I don't know many people, yet. I will slowly build as I meet ladies in the area. I suppose I am not in any hurry as I am really enjoying being home with my little boy.I couldn't agree with you more, motherhood is the best.

as far as i know once formula is mixed it's good for 24 hours as long as it's refrigerated. it can only be out of the fridge for 2 hours without going bad. also there is no need to heat the milk for your daughter at this age unless she likes it that way. i always just made my kids' bottles with tap water so it's not really cold, but i also gave them bottles right out of the fridge and they liked it just fine. and i've given my kids formula from a bottle that was previously drank from and they were fine. i think the bacteria thing is mostly for newborns who's immune systems are really weak. at 7 months your daughter should be just fine

Wait 10 minutes. if she's still hungry or fussy, than make it. The rule of 10 minutes is good for everything. She'll learn a lot of independence, and be a less whiny toddler. I'm sorry that I can't answer your milk question, but I hope this helps in LOTS of your parenting things. It helped me.

When this has happened to me I store it in the refrigerator and use it for her next feeding. You can warm it up by putting the bottle in hot water. They say if it is stored in the refrigerator it should be good for a day or two. I would also try to wait about 10-15 minutes before making it to see if she falls back to sleep (as long as she is not crying). I have a 7 1/2 month old as well and she usually falls back to sleep - it sometimes even takes her longer than that but I figure as long as she is just talking/playing in her crib she is fine. I don't go in her room either so she doesn't see me and want out. I so far haven't had any problems. Good luck!!

I tried to put my son on soy formula to combat him spitting up, but ended up going back to regular milk based formula. When I briefly switched, my dr didn't tell me any different way to mix, store, or expiration of it vs the milk based formula. I know with milk based it is good for 24 hours in the refridgerator and an hour at room temperature. You cannot refeed her with the same formula if she starts to eat and then quits; you have to throw it out. I know the price of formula adds up when you see how much you throw out if it's not eaten because my son doesn't always eat all of his bottle, so I agree with the other mothers, wait 10 minutes before preparing it in case she does go back to sleep on her own. If she is indeed waking up because she is hungry things won't change after those 10 minutes. Hope this helps!

Congrats on the upcome wedding!

Vallerie,

I fed my daughter Enfamil ProSoybee (soy formula) and I was advised by my peditrician that the formula should not be refrigerated and resused if heated. It is only good for one hour after heated. If the formula is unheated or room temperature it can be good for up to two hours or refrigerated if UNUSED for 24 hours. If the baby consumes some of the forumula do not reuse because the bacteria from the babies mouth can breed. Babies have more sensitive immune systems. What I did was left the formula at room temperature by leaving the bottled water on the counter. This way I did not have to worry about heating it at night or when we were out. Hope this helps. :-)
