So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all your helpful responses. I did also talk to her Doctor who did not recommend cows milk quite yet, so l am going with mixing the formula and breast and transition over that way. Thanks so much for all your input.

The only one my son would take was Gerber Good Start. It's not quite as smelly as some of the others. It also needed to be super warm or he wouldn't even take it. I hope this helps.

Talk to your pediatrician. My daughter started self-weaning at 9.5 months and her pediatrician told us we could just start whole cow's milk in her sippy cup instead of the water we were giving her at meals. You said your daughter won't eat baby food, but do you feed her anything other than breast milk? I would talk to your pediatrician anyway about your daughter's nutritional needs and whether they're being met for her age, if she's not eating any solids. Good luck!

Try mixing the formula and breast milk for a while, slowly increasing the amount of formula to breast milk over time. If you could hold off a month you could skip the formula and go straight to cows milk mixed with breast and skip having to change again so soon. If your daughter is not eating any solids please talk to her doctor about this.

Hi R.,

Formulas are full of chemicals and basically undo the nutrition that the manufacturers claim is in them to begin with. Goat's milk has the same type proteins that breast milk has. You can buy canned goat's milk at the grocery store. There is ongoing controversy about soy milk. Almond milk has healthy fats as well as protein, tastes good and has been used for centuries as a mainstay in most cultures.

She should be on formula until a year. Ask your pedi which foods to try, but they always start with rice cereal, so your safe trying that one. Use the least expensive brand of formula, but ask your pedi what type of formula she should be on. All formulas have the same main ingredients.

She won't be ready for cow's milk until at least age 1 (and I always waited till over a year to start). I don't care what some peds will tell you. Cow's milk just isn't the same and their little bodies just aren't ready to handle the amount of sodium and other things that cow's milk has that breastmilk doesn't have.

You either need to give her breastmilk or formula till then. Start by mixing breastmilk and formula if you need to wean before age one. That will help with the taste because formula is nothing like the sweet breastmilk she is used to.

My exclusively breastfed daughter wouldn't touch solids till she was over 9 months old. She would gag. So I took a gentle approach and offered about once a week till she came around.

Hi there firstly I suggest you try her with some expressed milk on a spoon and if you like perhaps just a teaspoon of baby rice in with it . Keep her on the spooned expressed milk and rice for a bit until she is used to this type of feeding. Slowly introduce other mixable baby foods such as porridge rusks and other cereals along with her milk and hopefully this will do the trick..If not you can try feeding her when she is held next to you it could be a comfort thing for her too.
All the very best with the weaning and well done for breastfeeding her for so long..

Hello R.,

I used the generic Kroger stage two brand. It's for babies age 9-24 months. I also breast fed the first 10months - year, but once my babies started eating table food my breastmilk wouldn't stay in supply.

Anyway, the Kroger stage two is affordable and high quality. 12.49 for a large can. If she's refusing, does she take breastmilk in a bottle? If not, maybe its the bottle? I would try some different bottles.

If she's refusing some baby food -- try something sweet like peaches, applesauce, bananas, even sweet potatoes. The meats can be kind of bland, but if you can warm her up to eating off the spoon, then you can try to expand her palate.

I hope some of this helps,
H.

I would forget looking in the stores for the speciality marketed 'baby' (and soon for you -- 'toddler') foods . . . just look at your own dinner plate for her meals. Assuming you eat relatively balanced and healthy meals, just start giving her small pieces of whatever you eat. You can puree/mash some foods. You can also look on-line for specific 'homemade babyfood' recipes. At ten months, the priority should be on introducing a variety of tastes -- if she does not like something the first time she tries it, give it to her again a few days later (continue this indefinently). Don't pressure her ('just one bite, sweety'), but rather offer it to her by putting it on her tray and then resume your eating (often babies will have more interest in eating if they see you eating). If she is hungry, she will eat.

Call your pediatrian, some will give you samples of a few different types so you can try them without having to spend a ton of money. It is really going to come down to preference. I did a search for reviews of formulas and didn't really find one that stood out. Also the nipple you use will make a huge difference. I used Playtex Ventaire bottles because they have a good variety of nipples to try. Once you find a formula she likes, you can mix some rice cereal with it and begin the process of transitioning her to baby food. Also sign up online for the Enfamil, Similac and Good Start mailings and they will send you free samples and coupons.

Good luck.

T.
