For Those Who Travel via Airlines

Its been about 10 years since I last flown and I have to for work. I am planning on just bringing a carry on so I don't have to check luggage and risk it getting lost. I am going to print my ticket before I leave but other than that, I am clueless. I know that the security is beefed up more than it was 10 years ago but I think I recall something about liquids. Like can I bring my hair care stuff and perfume in my carry on or would it be simpler if I checked luggage? Thank you to those who answer!

Make sure you have a current drivers license or state issued ID or passport with you to get through security. Think about what to wear - you want to be comfortable on the flight, but you also need to get through security and they have all kinds of rules. You might want to wear slip off shoes because you will have to take them off to go through security. You will also have to take off all metal - like your belt or jewelry. Underwire bras can also be a problem. You have to take off coats or extra layers of clothes, too. Laptops or other devices have to be taken out of there cases and run through security separately. Have a safe trip!

If you can get the sample sizes of your products, that may be perfect size-wise.

If you plan on checking in your luggage be prepared to pay for it. You should check with the airline on the cost, as it varies.

Check the TSA website for details on what you can bring on board. It needs to be in a travel/trial size bottle. I would skip the perfume since you don't need it. Just use the shampoo, lotion, etc they give you at the hotel.

While your on the website, make sure your carry on fits the size limits.

Make sure you have identification. You'll need photo id like a driver's license or passport.

To go thru security, you'll need to take off your shoes.

Most food (some small snack size unopened items are allowed) cannot go thru security. Be sure to eat before you leave or be prepared to purchase the food in the airport.

You need travel sizes of the stuff you bring. It doesn't have to be purchased that way (although a quick trip to the travel size isle at Target or the drugstore is usually worth it), you can empty small amounts into little bottles as long as each bottle is nor more than 3oz.

Check the size of your perfume bottle. That's a pain to decant and often those bottles are less than the limit.

Checking bags is rarely free now-a-days, so it's usually worth it to purchase whatever travel sizes you need... certainly won't cost more than the $30-40 bucks to check a bag!

I didn't read all the answers but I see folks are telling you to carry small amounts of liquid, but all these liquids must fit in one small size baggy! Otherwise they will throw them away in security. Instead of depending on our memories go to the website of the airlines you are flying. They will have all this information there for you.

Wear shoes easy enough to slip on and off when you go through the metal detectors.

No liquids over 3 oz including hair care and perfume.

I suggest a carryon on wheels or a fold up trolley/cart you can put your carryon on, which you can get in any travel section of any merchandise or sports store.

The liquid thing sucks. It can only be in three ounce portions and needs to be in a sandwich style zip bag and I think they limit you to five of them.

You can check on line on whatever airline you are flying. I'm sure they will have a list.

We usually fly Southwest because they don't charge you for bags and I have never lost one yet-cross my fingers :)

So my vote would be to check the luggage as long as they don't charge you an arm and a leg.

http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm I always read this website before I travel to make sure that I know about any changes.

Someone below mentioned most food can't go through check points. Not true. You can carry any food that is not a liquid or a gel. So avoid canned fruit, jello, peanut butter, pudding cups, etc unless they are 3 oz. or less and you include them in your quart size baggie of liquids. You can bring an empty water bottle through and then refill it after you go through security. However, a few airports do not have water fountains after security (like Bangor, ME) but those are rare.

If you don't have a seat reserved already, go online the day before the flight to get your seat.
Check the airline website for the rules. It is not just liquids. I had to toss a brand new tube of sunscreen I forgot I had in my purse. :( Like this nonsense is going to keep us safe!!

Check your luggage. It will help you relax knowing you brought everything you needed and don't have to lug around a big carry on when you are going thru the airport. The remaining "regulations" can be found on the airlines website easily. Have a fun trip!

If you want to carry hair care and perfume on board with you (not checked), then it has to be in containers that hold 3 ounces or less. You cannot have any containers that hold more (even if they are half full.) You must put them in a quart sized ziplock bag and pull them out for the security people - they want to actually see them.

You can buy some 3 ounce clear plastic bottles at the drug store and pour your shampoo and conditioner in them. That's how I do it. Pick up a travel size toothpaste tube (yes, they'll take a big toothpaste tube away from you) and travel size hairspray. Target has them.

If you want any clarification, go to your airline website and type in carry-on baggage. You'll get all the answers you need.

Good luck,
Dawn

I bring a check bag just so I don't have to deal with finding hair care stuff when I get there. 3 oz and only five. When you look at those crappy bottles in the hotel room that are pretty much one shot, that is three ounces.
