For Moms with Self-cleaning Ovens

Has anyone tried to clean a pan inside the oven during the self-cleaning? I have a 9x13 Caphalon baking sheet that has cooked on grease. It is one of the thick pans with low sides. Or, should I just throw it away?

What can I do next?

Have you tried filling it with water and heating it up in the oven? This helps release some of the grease. I do that with my cast iron and it works great!

Not sure I would put it in the oven during cleaning process. You never know
if the grease will catch fire! Is it that bad that you have to throw it out? I would soak it in detergent and hot hot water and then scrape it off. Seems
like such a waste to throw it out.

NO...it will burn and ruin your oven, not to mention create smoke in your house. They have a product in the dish soap isle that you spray on and let it sit overnight (i will have to look for mine and let you know that name)

Try Bar Keepers Friend. Make a paste out of it so the dust doesn't fly everywhere first. I use it on stainless steel, cookware, just about anything that needs some extra scrubbing but you don't want to scratch up.

Otherwise throw it away because the self cleaning idea won't work.

I would try using oxiclean on it before I stuck it in a self cleaning oven.

I googled this because I was intrigued. Many people do it with cast iron skillets apparently, but it looks like other pans catch fire. And since the oven locks during self cleaning (At least mine does), you are risking a serious fire hazard.

You can always put foil on the cookie sheet if it's still good otherwise.
I have some really good, old and sturdy ones, but over the years, they definitely don't look so pretty any more.
The first time I used a self cleaning oven, I realized immediately it was best to crack a few windows and leave before doing it.
It was a brand new oven and not even really dirty, but it smoked the entire house up.

Good luck.

I use the "heavy duty oven cleaner" in the yellow can. Works wonders in 5 minutes. I'll cover anything when needed with nonstick foil, parchment paper or wax paper. However, I do believe if something is consuming your time and you've tried many attempts to conquer it by cleaning and it hasn't worked...time to replace and never look back. You gave it a good go.

I would just replace the pan rather than continue to try to clean it, and I wouldn't even use it with foil over it. It's just not worth the trouble any more to keep it.

I no longer have a self-cleaning oven but I don't use chemical cleaners in it. It's a gas oven. I use my trusty Shark steam cleaner. That thing cleans latex paint and water based paint out of my wood floor that was decades old. It also got Silly Putty out of some fabric and other objects that it was supposedly stuck in permanently. So maybe if you have a steam cleaner with the attachment that shoots the steam in a stream, give it a go...
