Foods for Infants

My twins are 10 months old now and only one son has two teeth on the bottom fully out (since he was 8 mos.). My other son is just starting to get two teeth in. You can barely see them. I have been feeding them Stage 2 foods as extra to their regular breastfeeding.

Are they old enough to start Stage 3 foods even though they don't have any upper teeth? What about snacks like Cheerios? A friend of mine said that her daughter didn't get upper teeth until she was about 2 years old and she just gummed her food. But when do I start giving them food to gum?

I plan on weaning them from the breast at one year and may continue to nurse at night before bed since that is a special time for us. Some may wonder why I don't continue nursing, but it has been difficult with twins. They are growing so tall and I was nursing them together. Also, between the pinching and hair pulling, I think I need a break.

So what have you moms out there been doing? Thanks for your advice!

What can I do next?

I wouldn't give them anything small and firm or they could choke. You can go to Walmart in the baby section and get teething biscuits. They are really hard but are big enough for them to hold in their hand and chew on. They slowly dissolve and taste like graham crackers. All of my kids loved them. You can get some stage 3 foods like carrots but again, they might not be quite ready so test the waters and see how they do. OH, and something else they loved are the baby Vienna sausages. I would just cut them into tiny pieces and they would pick them up themselves.

As others said, teeth are not required for finger foods. My son cut his first tooth at 9 months and only had 2 teeth cut (not even all the way "up") at a year. Our pediatrician recommended he be completely off baby food by a year, so at 9 months we started giving puffs and cheerios. When he got used to those, we moved on to very ripe and soft fruit (banana is a great one to start with), cheese (a real winner!), tortilla pieces, cottage cheese, even small pieces of lunchmeat. Canned veggies also worked well, as they tend to be softer than fresh or frozen (I squished the peas because I was worried about choking). My nephews loved beans at that age. Their gums are amazing! Congrats on breastfeeding to a year! I also weaned at a year, and he didn't miss it at all.

I breastfed my two kids. At times it was extremely hard with one. I would say you are doing an amazing job of breastfeeding two for a year.

Many babies like finger foods at this age. My son had two teeth at 10 months. He would consume soft ripe bite sized fruit quite well at this age. When peaches were in season we wondered if he would stop. Many babies can gum small foods like cheerios quite well.

The book I really enjoyed was the Super Baby Food Book. Although its leaning was towards vegetarianism and everyone doesn't really acribe to that, I really liked the information on how and when to introduce different fruits and vegetables. As babies get older there are many things that you might prepare for your own dinner that you could include them in as well. the book was also good at helping you figure out how to get babies and toddlers the protein they needed. It gave you tips on how to prepare the fruits and vegetables (either by cooking or the way you slice it) to reduce chances that babies would choke.
Good luck.

First of all....congrats on BF, especially 10 month old twins!!! My 9 month old wants everything she sees us eating and isn't a big fan of Stage 3 foods due to the thickness of the puree. She actually gags and throws it up :( So her meal times begin with finger foods like cheerios, puffs, small pieces of fruit, smashed bread, etc. and then I sneak in the Stage 2 fruit and/or veg. She has 2 bottom teeth and is working on 1 top tooth. The biter toasts are great too, but very messy!

Hope this helps!

I just answered a very similar question.
My daughter (11 months now) refused baby food when she was around 8 months. She had only 2 teeth. I was uncertain about what to feed her but the ped. told me that it's amazing all they can do with their gums and I tried feeding her what we eat.
She did very well. Even with nearly no teeth, she could eat small pieces of well-cooked chicken, for example.
As long as it is soft enough (well-cooked rice, pasta, veggies), they will be OK and enjoy new textures.

I breast fed my twins, only lasted 4mo, you go girl! They don't have to have teeth to start stage 3 or finger foods. My 8mo eats some stage 3's and loves finger food. She eats pretty much what we eat, I just mash it up a little. She loves picking up peas with her little fingers and putting them in her mouth. As far as snack, get things that dissolve easy. Hope this helps

When your baby is around 8-10 months old, he/she should be ready for '3' baby foods. But remember that every child is different. Here is a great website with info on transitioning for various food stages, recipes, allergies, consitpation, etc. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/solidfood8to10montholdba...

Here is another wonderful site that has a chart that shows age of child, food sequence, food presentation and developmental skills, implications for feeding http://www.askdrsears.com/html/3/T030500.asp

My daughter is also taking forever to get her teeth. She only had 2 until about 11 mo and then had 4 until 15 mo. I would give her stage 3's and soft things like graduates ravioli, cheerios, ritz, soft graduates fruit. From about 12 mo on she would get what ever we have for dinner, just cut up very small. She gets steak, chicken, pork, all sorts of veges, fruits, beans, rice, and potatoes. She eats pretty much everything we do but in small pieces for her to gum on.

Sounds like you have had some good advice and mine is pretty much the same. My daughter started eating nothing but "adult" food at 10 months old and only had her front two teeth barely in. We transitioned into this starting around 9 months old, but she LOVES all the different foods and textures and it makes dinner time a lot easier for all of us when we can all eat the same thing!
Also, Congratulations on breast feeding TWINS for a year!
