Are there any foods that your doctor has banned for you? Do you abide by the restiction?

My endocrinolgist has banned me from popcorn due to a history of a colon polyp. I love popcorn. I rarely eat it now and will not buy it to pop at home, but I had some yesterday at a park. IT WAS SO GOOD!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I did not say that I saw the endocrinologist for this problem... However, he IS the one that read the past history and made that comment.

I'm at the point of needing medication for cholesterol so I revamped by diet. 3 oz of chicken or fish a day, beans, oatmeal. No dairy which is awful. In my house cheese and ice cream are food groups but for me its not worth it if it means I'll have to take a pill every day. I still have it in the house because my hubby, who won the gene lotto, has perfect cholesterol and loves dairy and meat. So its in the fridge every time I open the door it calls to me but I leave it alone.

Being a grown up is soooo overrated.

Can you have Pirate Booty snacks? They are close to popcorn.

Hi Ronda,

I grew up with Ulcerative Colitis and when I was young I always dodged popcorn....saying that to say this, intestinal issues can be completely healed. It is not a genetic condition. It's a matter of keeping your colon healthy. The inception of the internet saved my life. My medical doctors told me I would be dead at 50, die childless and crippled until then. I'm 57, feel better now than I did at 20 and am enjoying my first grandchild. Popcorn is not evil....BUT, you have to get to the point that you are healed. It's not as hard as the medical community makes it. They take symptoms and attack them, much like a roped horse attacks the rope instead of the man holding the rope.

Avoiding synthetic chemicals in all forms, a diet high in fiber, low in sugar (sugar comes in MANY forms), and getting the nutritional things you eat to actually absorb is the key. Medicines don't help and the longer you have these issues, the more prone you are to the cancers. Avoid the popcorn for now...if you want to pick my brain, I'm an open book. I HATE to see anyone live like I lived for 35 years of my life....

Regards,
M.

Last November I had diverticulitis. The first doctor said no popcorn, no fruits with small seeds, blah blah blah. The next three including a specialist said you may get this again in a week or never again. Everyone has polyps, sometimes this happens. Eat what you want. I listened to the last three.

When I was pregnant I had gestational diabetes. I followed the diet to the letter, because I knew it was best for the baby. The only time I slid was when we had a huge, celebratory lunch at work and our company owner, who was in from out of town and didn't know about the diabetes, brought me a big slice of chocolate cake. I have willpower, but if cake is put in front of me, it's hard. I felt like the worst mom in the world when I checked my blood sugar later, but the doctor told me that one time was ok.

Do you understand why he banned it? Are you willing to risk your colon health for the short period of enjoying popcorn?

My cousin died of cancer which started in his colon. Our family had digestive issues including diverticulitis. Their health issues worsened over time. I suggest that having popcorn once in awhile, as a treat, may not be harmful. And that any difficulty it might cause will be relatively minor giving you a chance to revisit your decision. I would ask your doctor if occasionally you had popcorn would be haemful. One polyp doesn't sound serious enough to never have popcorn but we don't know the cause of the polyp nor the necessity of refraining from eating popcorn. Is popcorn the only food you are to avoid.

I urge you to talk more with your doctor.

My daughter has ulcerative colitis. She was casual with her diet and became more sick. She pays more attention now. I have IBS (irritable bowel) and mostly only pay attention to diet when I have symptons. Whether or not having popcorn will be harmful depends on the reason for avoiding it and how it will affect your colon. Only your doctor can answer that.

I couldn't eat popcorn due to it getting in my broken teeth so I've gotten over that desire. It smells SOOOOO good popping but truly, the smell is better than the greasy feeling it leaves in your mouth after eating it.

If they still made caffeine free Dr. Pepper I'd have nothing else in my house, I loved it. I had anxiety attacks for a long time and lowering my caffeine helped some. But since they took it off the market I drink regular.

A friend of mine suffered from diverticulitis for many years, so nuts, seeds and popcorn were on her no-no list. She had a family history of digestive problems so she thought there was nothing she could do about it. They could put her in the ER as well as cause horrible pain. Her husband now calls her "The Queen of Popcorn" because she takes a patented digestive supplement that healed everything up. She has no pain or problem, and eats everything. She's been to a lot of programs and lectures by food scientists and has met tons of people who did the same.

I'm curious that you saw an endocrinologist for colon problems. Isn't that kind of unusual?

My son is allergic to dairy, anything with corn in it, and wheat. It is a pain in the tail. Luckily, none of the above are life threatening so sometimes we slide, a little, on the restrictions. The effects are behavior related so we stick to it pretty closely. It's hard though.

Not for me.
My Mom had to stop eating anything thing that has caffeine in it due to a breast cyst she had years ago.
I'm not sure the recommendation is valid anymore (I think they've determined caffeine is not a factor in the sort of cyst she had) but she's lost all tolerance for it and she's use to not having it now.
My Mom also has diverticulitis and so can not eat anything that could irritate that.

i haven't been 'officially' banned from anything, but you don't have to be a doctor to know i should avoid sugar. and no, i don't.
