My son is almost 5 months old and has been eating rice cereal for a couple of weeks now. When do you recommend trying other foods (veggies, fruits, etc)?

What can I do next?

Thats funny...all the responses say to start with veggies first...My dr. recommended fruits first...white ones...pears, apples bannanas... They said that the whole starting with veggies first because they aren't sweet is a huge myth. Both of my daughters started with fruit first, and absolutely love vegatables, but we don't really give them any other option...its just how we eat. good luck!

With my first children, I did everything pretty much according to what the dr.'s recommened at the time. (Which changes like the wind!) Now, I wait until they show interest in eating solids first. Then, I just give them small amounts of stuff on my plate that I can mash. The kids I have done that with actually have done really well. I really try to give them what I can from my plate. Since I breastfeed, there is not rush to get solids into them, it is more of an introduction to try stuff than nourishment. I actually think the kids I have done that with are less picky.

There are general guidelines to follow concerning the age to start any solids.. but I also depends on the child. Every situation is a little bit different. But usually when they are pretty close to sitting up on their own you can start. I would say you are probably ok to start. I have one that I had to start feeding her baby food as eary at 3 and a half months. If you're baby isn't really picky and likes to eat (mine was not a good eater), then they suggest starting with veggies first, since the fruits are sweet enough to encourage eating.. and they don't want the baby only wanting to eat the sweeter food, so they say to do the veggies first. And, of course, to only try one at a time, for about a week, to make sure there are no reactions (and if there is a reaction, you know which food is causing it). Other than that, there's nothing set in stone. .. just kinda watch your child and get a feel for what YOU think they are ready for.

I agree. Our ped. said it was best to start with the greens (veggies) then move through to the sweetest (fruits) last. Only because you don't want them to get hooked on the sweet taste, and then refuse what's after that. I personally would much rather eat the peaches that the green beans, but can't always do that. Plus, the greener ones are more fiberous than the starchy ones (potates, corn...sweeter ones), so it'll keep them "pooing" okay. Sorry, starches can bind them up sometimes.

do wait at least a week before you try a new one. Not only to see if there's a reaction, but that it's not making them constipated.

It's up to you, but you could start now if you want to. My son was almost 6 months before we even started him on cereal. When you do start him on the baby food, they recommend doing the yellow ones first. I always do the veggies first so they acquire a taste for them before doing the fruit as that's always a favorite. Also, don't give up on giving them something they don't like. My son doesn't especially like the green beans, but he's doing better with them each time I give them to him!

Try food now. I made my own food, and they loved it, and were excellent eaters! Both my kids were on table food by 7 months. I followed thier lead.

I would say 6 months old. When my son was younger because the baby food was so spendy, I blended up peas, carrots, etc and he love it. Then I would buy the applesauce in the big jars and give him that. But it is whatever you think is best. Good luck.

I agree with Brandy. You can start whenever you like, just make sure to wait at least 3 days (preferably a week) before offering another food to watch for reactions.

I know some people say it doesn't matter, but I started both my kids with veggies first and then fruits. To this day both my kids LOVE veggies. It's the first thing they will eat on their plates. I started with what I thought was the least paletable - green beans and worked to sweeter veggies like sweet potatoes and carrots. Then when I started fruits, I offered less sweet fruits like peaches first and ended with bananas. To this day, there is not a fruit or veggie my kids won't eat (they are 4 and 2).

This is such a fun time for you and your son. He'll sure make some interesting faces so make sure to have your camera ready!

We waited until 6 months to start other foods- but I know other people who started sooner and their babies did just fine. We did start with the veggies first and worked our way through all of those before we did fruits. I would make sure to introduce things gradually so you can watch for allergies or upset tummy/constipation. We went 4 to 5 days before introducing something new.

I recommend starting vegtables first. Both of my boys absolutely love veggies!! AND everyone I have talked to that started their kids on veggies first, says that their kids love veggies even the veggies mom and dad don't like!! It used to be 6 months when my boys were younger, was when you started the veggies and fruits. But we were also told to try all the cereals first. I don't know what the guidelines are now, my boys are 8 and 10 lol.

I got all of my feeding advice off of gerber.com. They give you advice on what stages to start feeding certain foods, how much, and how often to introduce a new food. It is very helpful! They even give a menu of foods to feed your baby during the week (once all foods are introdced) so your baby is getting the right amount of fruits and veggies. It is extremely helpful!

My advice is stick with the cereal until he is about six months and then start slowly on veggies first then add in the fruits and then by the time he is about 8-9 months old he can be on the meats.

I am a nursing mom and I took advice from my lactation consultant and my sons dr. I started my son on rice cereal from 4-5 months, then at 5 months I introduced oatmeal. I then started his actual baby food at 6 months old, giving him the same one in the evening for 2-3 days. I wanted to make sure and watch for signs of allergic reaction. I started with orange veggies, then moved to green and then fruits last.I really struggled with when to introduce foods as well. Really, I would say talk with your doctor, every child is differnt. I wanted to take it slow because of their inability to digest foods. Sorry I don't have a specific age, but good luck with your decision.

You can go ahead and try other foods now.
I would do veggies first, my DD loved sweet potatos.
You will find he will like some things cold, and some things warm.
Remember to only try one food for a few days and watch for an allergic reaction. Then try a diff. food.
