Food Comments- Hurt Feelings

Im really close with my parents and we spend a lot of time with them. My dad goes through waves where he is into exercise and eating right and then not caring too much. He is currently in a weight watching kick.

I gained about 45 pounds while pregnant... and my son is now 1 year old. Ive lost about 51 pounds but since Im still nursing my appetite is quite large and in charge. Basically- I eat all the time and Im always hungry. I cant control it.
But since Ive lost the weight I dont think much of it. Unless someone makes a comment. My appetite is totally different than it ever has been-- I was once picky and now Ill eat anything. I dont know what happened.

When Im out with my dad he ALWAYS has to make comments and they are really starting to hurt my feelings. Im super sensitive about weight and my appearance, especially since I dont feel like I will ever have my old body back.

The comments he makes sting and they are embarassing. I dont know what I should do or say to make him understand he is hurting me. I tried last night and he just responded with, do you really need that piece of bread-- and I said, yeah actually I do-- Im hungry.
I weigh 135, I might not be as fit and toned as I once was, but Im not over weight.

Any advice....

What can I do next?

For someone like your father you need to arm yourself with knowledge. Do a little research and find out how many calories a nursing mother is supposed to consume in a day. When your father makes a comment respond with, I'm allowed to eat bread--my body needs the carbohydrates to feed your grandson. Educate him on the amount of calories it takes produce breast milk and how you are doing your best to give your child all the nutrients he needs by eating healthy yourself. Men have no idea what carrying a child and then nursing a child does to your body. Today's men are encouraged to read parenting books, etc. My Dad sat in the waiting room until after I was born. I often tell people that my daughter sucked my calcium out of my teeth. After my pregnancy I had 16 cavities. All because I didn't consume enough calcium. So, again, arm yourself with knowledge and stick up for yourself. Just make sure you've got good information first, I love starting a conversation with "according to the American Medical Association..."

P.S. Congratulations on loosing all that weight plus some. Its not an easy task.

Say, 'you do realize that I'm burning twice as many calories because I'm nursing? You do want a healthy grandchild and you want me healthy also, right? Please stop commenting on what I eat.' Or change the subject each and every time and hopefully he'll get the hint. DON'T feel bad about what you eat or how much, you lost your pregnancy weight! That's AWESOME!

J.,

Just tell him that when he is able to create a human being in his body and nurish that child with his body for over a year then he can open his mouth about your eating habits. You are probably sensitive about your body because what you have heard from your father growing up has been warped to a perfect body. Also, I would tell him that if he can not stop with the offending comments while he is eating with you then you will not be eating with him. Do this at a time before you are actually eating with him. Clearly and bluntly tell him that you do not want to hear one word, or even a look, about your eating habits. If he will not stop then leave and let him realize that this is important to you.
