so my son has pretty much turned away from baby food and has been eating table food. last night i gave him a gerber graduate cheese rav. meal with tomato sauce and some sauce got on his face under his eye. his skin turned a little puffy and got red becuase i didnt wipe the sauce off fast enough. what does this mean? he does get rashed if food is on his face too long. he is not having a reaction so far from eating any foods..just if it touches his face! any thoughts?

What can I do next?

My son has this reaction from Ranch dressing. He eats it all the time but when it gets on his face he gets red and sometimes swelling. He has been eating ranch since he was about 10 months old, and he is now 3 and it still happens. I just try to wipe immediately. I also keep a napkin for him next to him and now he is learning to wipe himself right away. Not always with the napkin, he often goes for his sleeve, LOL. I have noticed he also sometimes gets red from the sauce on pizza. I think it is just a skin sensitivity since he eats everything no problem, and he has been tested for allergies since his sister has some pretty severe food allergies, but he has none at all. Just try to wipe him right away.

He could simply have sensitive skin, my daughter has eczema and I have to watch what is on it, or lands on it. Perhaps the tomato sauce was acidic for him. In any event, I would recommend making your own sauces and foods, there is usually too much sugar (and who else knows what) in prepared foods.

It's probably a skin sensitivity issue. My nephew has a similar reaction to certain store-brands of ranch dressing. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but maybe mention it to his ped at your next appt, to see if there's anything that you can use to help w/ the rash. It would be really difficult to tell a toddler not to eat spaghetti sauce ever again!

Hi, A.;
Tomato sauce has a tendency to cause a rash on the baby's face because it is acidic. Rinse the baby's face with warm water and apply a cream or lotion.

I would look for reactions to products. My DD started to get rashes on her face and diaper area and we couldn't figure it out. Finally we realized it was apples...especially raw apples. If she ate them, she got a rash on her face. I'd try to isolate the components in the meal and figure out if it's the sauce, the cheese or something else.

He could be having a reaction to the tomato sauce. My one nephew had eczema and tomato sauce would give him a rash. Before they ate spaghetti,my SIL would put vaseline on his face around his mouth and chin. It seemed to help.
