Does anyone have any successful solutions to getting rid of flies in my back yard? I have tried the listerine gimmick (didn't work) & tried the plastic baggie with a penny in it. I think that worked the first year i did it but not working now. I'm considering a bug zapper and anything else that has PROVEN to work. We live on the edge of a residential area & have a small farm behind us. I guess that's where they are coming from. They are biting my dogs & swarming on my vehicles & pooping on everything!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up making a solution of 1 cup Skin So Soft, 2 cups white vinegar, 1 Tablespoon Eucalypyus oil and 3 cups water. I sprayed it all around my back porch & even on the brick & wood trim. It actually is supposed to be sprayed on dogs & horses so I also sprayed the dogs. It worked!

Hello Candy,

Here is a link.

I wonder if you plant mint and rosemary around the yard if that would keep them away.

For my cousin's wedding last summer I got little satches and put in cotton saturated w/ peppermint oil and hung them around the tent and outdoor areas. no problems /w flies or mosquitoes. =) but doing this every day would be too much.

Good luck! ~C.~

Make sure you have no standing water or garbage out (spray your trash bags with ammonia when you put them out). Keep your dog's "messes" cleaned up. If this is not the problem, then you need to go to the Home Depot and buy some yard fogger... it's pretty strong stuff, but may keep them away. Also, do you have any specific trees or plants that they might be attracted to?

I doubt anyone has really ever gotten rid of lots of flies, but We have knocked down quite a few every year by hanging zip lock bags of water with a red strip down the middle. I am no scientist so I could not tell you. Now I use mine to keep away from the house, a big yard.....proberly wont work.....good luck

Candy, you have to find out where they are breeding. Flies lay eggs in rotting animal matter----like dead bodies or your dogs fecal matter. The eggs develop into maggots (YUCK) that feed on the stuff they were hatched in. At some point the become flies and those flies lay eggs in------you get the idea.

So you have to think like a momma fly that is looking for a good maternity suite. My guess is the dog poop. How many dogs do you have? Do you clean daily? Please check your dogs also. Large, long haired dogs can harbor an infected area that may have the maggots.

Good luck!
