Fluid in the ears is really common but left can cause major hearing problems. Take her to a ENT doctor and let them take a look , my guess is they will probably put tubes in her ears , my daughter is having this op done on Monday for fluid in her ears.

POOR BABY, both you and her.

I know this might seem hokey, but see a chiropractor.
It helped me, my brother & sister.
not to mention my husband and our child.

I had swimmers ear my whole life. They wanted to put tubes in my ears.
Then a family-friend suggested a chiropractor. My life was saved (I'm a little fish to water) and showers, pools and swimming in the ocean were no longer off limits.

When my little-man, myself and hubby all got an ear infection, instead of going for the meds, I went to my chiropractor. and low and behold our ears began to drain on their own!
You can write it off as coincidence if it were just one person, but this was for myself (for the second time), my husband and our son ( who was barely a year old at the time).
Not to mention my siblings when we were younger (ages 3- 8).

Excess fluid in the ear may be caused by allergies. When I was little, I had excess fluid that was causing deafness. Long story short, after a second opinion, they put me on antihistamines and it cleared up.

My daughter also had excess fluid in her ears off and on a couple of years ago until I had her allergy tested and found out she was allergic to dust mites. So I would check into possible allergies and see if they have an antihistamine she can take.

Last, but not least, since she has been on multiple doses of penicillin, I would strongly recommend giving her some probiotics (acidophilis, bifidus, etc...). Yogurt is good, but the best is to get some powdered probiotics for babies and put a little in her baby food daily for at least a couple of weeks. The probiotics restore the "good" bacteria she needs in her body and will help strengthen her immune system and digestion.

get some saline solution for the nose, you don't need the baby brand, just the generic store brand of nasal saline & squirt it up each nostril at each diaper change-she won't like it but too bad, lol, the pressure of the squirting helps to clear the ears- don't suction anything out, just let gravity do it's job...
next: get another pediatrician! and get to a pediatric ENT NOW...

They are waiting to see of the ear drains on its own. If it affect hearing that is an issue. My son had to get tubes to drain the fluid. Chiropracter did not help him. It was a waste of money. The tubes are wonderful. They really helped the infections. Unfortunately, my son had to go to speech therapy because he could not hear for so long. I'd see another ENT because it's so bad he need speech therapy, I think I waited too long. The Dr's advised me to wait but I should have forced the surgery earlier. Good luck.

On your next ped. visit, ask if it could be enlarged adenoids. My neighbor's girl had similar symptoms, and she ended up having her adenoids & tonsils removed and is MUCH better.

they told you this will cause her to be deaf and you're not screaming!!!!!????
GET HER TO A PEDIATRIC ENT FIRST THING IN THE MORNING.
constant ear infections caused my daughter major hearing loss. even though i had her at countless ENTs and pedatricians. fluid, infection causes hearing loss, and damage to inner ear.

First of all dump all those doctors and find new competent ones! Second of all find out what's causing the allergies to have ear problems in the first place. A 5 mo old with ear infections is at high risk of developmental delays. Fluid in the ears messes with the vestibular system which is our sense of balance, the body's pacemaker. Once that goes south there are usually big problems with the quality and quantity of basic early motor skills. Please advocate for your child because no one else will. Check out NAET.com for a provider as well. Get her treated naturally.

Hi D.

I would look on the website Earthclinic.com they have alot of all natural remedies for you to try. You type up the problem and it gives you remedies to try. You also get people who talk to you about what they did and if it works or not. What I do for my kids is peroxcide in their ears for 10 mins. on each side. This helped my little one who gets ear aches one in a while. but I would also look into finding a holistic pharmasist to help you as well. I would change doctors, because they have no clue what to do your your poor child. Good Luck.

You definitely need to get a second opinion. It seems like some parts of your story are missing, though. What did the ENT say? It seems unusual that they would just send you back to the pediatrician without explaining anything to you. Who is telling you she could be deaf? If it's one of the doctors, they should be giving you some advice as to where to go next.

And just to alleviate some of your concerns, it's unlikely that she became allergic to the penicillin because of being overdosed. The doses can go pretty high, even for babies. Many people are allergic to penicillin, and it really has little to do with the dose. It does reinforce the idea that your daughter may have allergy issues, though.

I don't personally know of any doctors in Gainesville, but Shands is a great hospital, so I am sure you can find some that are affiliated with them.

Hi D.,

I agree with Ari that it may be caused by a reaction to something. You need to be working on building her immune system. My first recommendation is get her to an upper cervical chiropractor right now. They can do wonders with everything but one of the most common things that they fix are the ears. I was able to dodge tubes because of my chiropractor. If you don't have one go to upspine.com and look for one in your area. Chiropractors get the immune system working so the body can fight off the problem as it is supposed to.

Another thing you can do is get the chemical stimuli out of the house. This is probably exacerbating the problem. My personal opinion is that another ENT will just suggest more antibiotics or tubes. Dodge tubes if at all possible. The scarring that is left doesn't seem to do much damage now but in her later years it will definitely cause hearing problems. The eardrum was never meant to be punctured.

God bless!

M.

D.,

As a mom of three and a researcher for holistic medicine I can tell you what I have found works for my family.

As another mom mentioned do get your baby a probiotic. There is a great one you can get at at Healthfood store called I flora for children and infants.
Do have her hearing checked at the ENT. My daughter had the same problem and could not hear me at all anymore. They said surgery and tubes were an option I said no and cured her with Garlic.

We use garlic and mullein drops in the ear and I gently pull the earlobe in all directions after I put in the drops. By massaging around the ear and neck and pulling the earlobe you are making a way for the fluid to be released. Some parents actually have their babies receive massage and or chiropractic adjustment for ear fluid and infections - I have read that its very effective.

The drops I get are here http://www.luckyvitamin.com/p-14164-herbs-etc-mulleingarl...;

Here is an archived article I had on fluid in the ear you might find helpful
http://www.thenaturalguide.com/earinfection.htm

Your baby is too young to be taking so many antibiotics. It breaks down the order of the digestive system and eventually lowers their immunity to outside germs.

God Bless You & Baby
