Hi there, my daughter is 16 months old. These symptoms started last Sunday afternoon. She threw up that evening, and then in the middle of the night. Monday night, Tuesday morning a gag, Wednesday all over the car after daycare, Thursday at daycare, and today at daycare... it's on an average of once a day... She had 2 heavy diarreah diapers on Tuesday, and 1 on Wednesday.... I called the Dr on Monday evening, he said to give her a 1/2 teaspoon of pepto bismal... I mixed her bottle with gatorade and milk... if it's not milk color, she won't drink it... no fever, roller coaster demeanor... Happy playing laughing runnning, normal behavior... then all of a sudden, she will gag and throw up like 4 times in a row, projectile! Poor appetite... We took her to the Dr on Thursday, he said that her ears are perfect... no infection there.... he took a urine sample thinking she may have a UTI. We will not hear from him until tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I thought I'd get on here to see if anyone had any idea's. Could she be teething her canine's that would be causing her all this grief this week? I mean... the poor punkin, has no appetite, and she's throwing up what seems to be like a pint of fluid! He diaper's are wet, and a normal stool this morning, so she' snot dehydrated. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

So What Happened?

She's fine, we went to the Dr again today, they xray'd her abdomen, she's had a touch of the flu, and because of the BRAT diet, she's now constipated. Thanks to everyone's help.

Sounds like she's probably fine, just has a little touch of the flu. As long as she's not getting dehydrated and is acting pretty normal, I wouldn't worry.

Have you considered food/milk allergies? I would take her to an allergist. Also, a side note....I was told to not give children pepto bismal for the same reasons you do not give children aspirin.

Good luck!!!

This sounds a lot like when my son gets the stomach bug (roto virus) He threw up for a couple of days on average one to maybe two times quit a bit (he would gag a lot and spit up mucus also) and then it changed to blow outs for diapers for about a week (white stools) I would just mix gatorade (yellow) with his milk to help. Other than that you just have to let it runs its course. And make sure you wash your hands real good and keep things clean or the rest of the family will get the stomach flu. Oh and he wouldn't really eat anything except fluids for over three days.

This web-site explains the virus...Very popular this time of year. We have gone through it twice and our kids arn't in daycare.

ummm. it sounds like your baby has a tummy bug. what kind of doctor would recommend pepto bismal to a child?? i would get a new doctor. firstly, if your child is throwing up, you can't give her any food for at least four hours after she vomits. then easy things...the brat diet...banana, rice, apple and toast. if she keeps it down, then you can gradually add more. no milk. gatorade-like drinks and water. my child had a tummy bug for a few days and her energy level was alright, but she keep throwing up. we pushed the foods too fast. when we slowed down the foods, she got better. also, don't bring her to school!! i nkow you're working, but if she's puking, she's spreading that all over. keep her inside your home. she'll get better quicker if she is resting. hopefully she is better by this response. much luck ~s

If she's on cow's milk, she could be allergic to it. My grandson had projectile vomiting, and his doctor just kept changing him to a different cow's milk formula. When he was with me for awhile I changed him to a soy formula, and the problem disappeared entirely.

My daughter had this happen once, all the projectile vomiting....and it was just a stomach virus. Have they ruled that out?

Sounds like Roto-Virus... as in "roto-rooter!" Not sure of the right spelling, but that is how it's pronounced. It's been going around, and symptoms can last up to 7-10 days in little ones. Starts with vomiting, then progresses to vomiting and diarrhea. Sometimes several times a day, sometimes once. Also comes with a mild fever. VERY CONTAGIOUS!!! Try to minimize contact with others for 48 hours after the LAST incident. Focus on fluids and the BRAT diet: Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. These will help clog her up again. This is what my doctor diagnosed my daughter with when she had the symptoms your daughter has. My sister is a medical assistant and she gave me the same daignosis. You might want to consider switching doctors. Have fun doing laundry :)

I would say that it sounds like a UTI or Kidney infection. Possibly even a partial bowl blockage. I would give her the pepto in a medicine dropper if it makes it so she won't eat her bottle. You could try gatorade by itself but get the less acidic ones like grape or blue or red (well, maybe not red. it may look like blood if she vomits it). I honestly wouldn't worry too much as long as she can still cry tears and her diapers are wet. Diffinetely put pressure on your DR if she's not better in about 10 days after the 1st vomit. I don't know how old she is but if she's old enough for solid snacks I would suggest some high fiber stuff like pears, peaches or maybe even a piece of a bran muffin. Poor babe! I hope she gets better soon.

She sounds like she has developed an allergy to milk. I would test that theory by taking her off milk for awhile. Go to the store and buy Pedialite (sp), which most kids like, and that should be all she gets for liquids until she is better, then give her a little milk and see what happens.

Feed her no-acid soft foods so she doesn't get a rash from the diareah. (Low acid foods would be the type of foods you would eat if you didn't want to get heartburn.)

I had to pick my 2 year old up from daycare last Friday as he was throwing up 4-5 times after eating or drinking anything. He was like that all day. Daycare said that Rotavirus was going around and can last 4-7 days. We were nervous yesterday (Saturday), but no throwing up and just the 1 diarrhea diaper on Friday morning. Today (2 days later), he is back to his normal self. You're doing the right things by trying to keep her hydrated. Hopefully this is what she has also and will be getting better super fast. Good luck!

Hi,
I agree with Keni M. that your child should be kept home if she has diarreah, fever, or vomiting. I would question the quality of the daycare if they are willing to accept sick children!

Until you find out for sure (if you do), I would treat it like the flu- clear liquids only and then start very slowly adding back bland foods like rice cereal and bananas. Hopefully it will resolve soon!

I dont know when my older son had the roto it was just very smelly weird colored runs. No vomiting. But since your lil girl is in daycare it very well could be a stomach bug. The one that was going around though only lasted for a day or two. But that doesnt mean she hasnt picked something else up. I could be teething but with that much vomit i would think it something else. did they do blood tests as well? did the doc seem to think it was a virus my doc usually has a good sense of virus or not just by listening to symptoms and what not. They now have a vaccine for roto that they give kids too my 15 month old had it given to him thank god. Anyways I would wait to see what the test say. Any doc i have seen has said that if the vomit lasts longer then two days at most it could be soemthing more serious and since it is so off and on usually with the flu you have to flu there is no coming and going. Let us know!!

I will be honest, I am not sure about what is going on. But I sure would keep tabs on it. But as far as teething goes, usually a child will be very fussy, their gums will swell, and sometimes will run a fever. I have never heard of a child throwing up teething. So anyway, hope this helps. T.

My three year old complained of a tummy ache and started vomitting on Sunday. Monday she seemed perfectly normal. No vomitting at all. Wednesday she seemed fine all day and then vomitted a lot at bedtime. I called the doctor and they said there is a flu going around that seems to come and go for about a week. As long as I stick to easy-to-digest foods, she seems fine. Banana, toast, jello, etc.

Now my 14 month old has it. Her stomach is a bit more senstivie, but we're just treating her with a similar diet.

Milk WILL make a child throw up if they have a stomach flu.

Don't take what I am typing as being mean, that is truly not my intent. None of your other replies touched on this subject and I feel it's important to get this out there.
1st, get your child out of the day care for a while! You listed a few days of being at day care and being sick...your child may of caught it at day care, you have now risked other kids by taking a sick child to day care...the pattern isn't going to get better if sick children aren't cared for properly. Does the day care know your child is sick??? Get blood work and a RSV nose swab test. My daughter contracted RSV when I was doing child care. One of the babies I was watching kept getting sick, then my daughter, then the rest of the kids...RSV...look it up, it's a viral lung infection that has NO CURE. RSV lives dormant in your lungs until it is triggered by a cold or illness and can have one or all symptoms or a combo of just a couple when it is triggered. My daughter is now 9, but still has RSV breakouts. ADULTS can get RSV too.
RSV SYMPTOMS: SNOTTY NOSE(EVEN JUST CLEAR),COUGH(SOMETIMES SO HARD IT MAKES THEM VOMIT, & A LOT OF THE TIMES MIS-DIAGNOSED AS BRONCHITIS), FEVER...Remember it could just be one symptom or a combo of them or ALL OF THEM...Children are resilient and will be playful when they are sick. You need to take the time and pay attention to how they are playing and who is sick around them. I keep pedialyte and pediasure on hand at ALL TIMES.

Dear J.,
Time to get a new doctor!!! It doesn't sound like he's taking this seriously at all. I hope some moms out there have some medical expertise, because you aren't getting the attention you deserve. It could any number of things and should be approached from many angles, not just check the ears and urine. She needs more tests, but I know if you are like most of us, health care costs are a huge issue. My advice is to be persistent in the doctors office and not leave until you are satisfied he is covering all the angles. Good Luck.

Possibly a milk allergy? Try soy milk and see if it improves.

I am a fan of medical shows on the Discovery channel. I saw one not too long ago about a little girl that did the same thing, except she threw up at night. After many trips to the docto, they found out she had epilepsy and the vomiting was part of the seizure. They are now able to control it with seizure medication. It might be worth looking into.

Is she thirsty? Watch for symptoms of diabetes. Your blood & urine tests will tell you that, too. My son was only 9 months old whan he had those symptoms. The smell of his breath changed, too. Good luck- keep persuing- something is definitely going on!

We are having nearly the EXACT same symptoms! My son, Alex is 12 months old and has been sick since Tuesday with a wicked cold and vomiting and on and off. We took him to the doc on Wednesday, same thing...ears and chest are clear. I've talked to the nurse a couple of times this week, including the nurse at Children's today, and she said 1/2 of King County's toddlers have this same thing right now.

Her advice was half strength formula or Pedialyte (which my son won't take) and sips of water or diluted juice. It's just a virus that's running crazy right but it should ride out on it's own. But that doesn't make the nights any easier. My son's been throwing up at night and staying awake afterwards for 30 to 90 minutes just wanting to be held. This is certainly not teething for us. Teething would be a blessing compared to this.

Good Luck.

About me: I'm a 29 year old SAHM with one 12 month old son. In my former life I was a high school teacher.

My GUESS would be teething. I know my daughter throws up every time she gets a new tooth - like the tooth makes her salivate, and then it gags her? I hope she gets better soon!!!

Sound almost like a food alergy, could be lactose intolerent. Being too excited though may make her throw up. Diareah suggests food alergies, or too much of something. she also could be tipping the scale of acid reflux, Pepto is too strong for her I think you should try the "Bland diet". Please look it up I forgot allresady shat it consits of. My son has been tested for alergies, harmless and may give up an answer. Whish I could help more. Good Luck. -Washington
