Hi mamas,
I would like to ask how people feel about giving their toddlers (2-3 yr olds) the flu vaccine. For those who got the vaccine or are planning on it this season, what are your thoughts about the flu shot (dead virus) vs. flu mist vaccine (live virus) for 2 year olds.
Thanks,
M.

Hello,
We either request the shot without the preservative or the flu mist. Since my daughter hates shots, we did the flu mist just this last Monday. By Tuesday afternoon, she had a fever, aches and headaches and had to stay home from school yesterday. She's fine today, but these are the "classic" side effects and she got them. So if you'd like to steer clear of the shot, just be aware of the side effects of the mist and plan accordingly.

My daughter hates shots, but requested it over the mist last year because of the horrible way the mist made her feel the previous year. We only do the shots now. That was just our experience. Good luck!

I never thought about the difference in whether the virus was dead or live when given to them.

I always thought it was about personal preference. We always did the shot and then last year we tried the mist. My son HATED it. He has sensory processing issues due to his ASD and for him it was horrible. This year he has already told me that he wants a shot, not the mist.

Last year when my son was 2 he had the flu mist instead of the shot. He had to get some immunizations so I figured one less shot would be good. He had no side effects from it.

I really didn't give it much thought and went with what my son felt more comfortable with. Last year he got the mist and did great so I planned on it this year, but then he told me he wanted the shot. He actually suprised me and did very well with it.

I never thought it was about personal preferences. When he got it thru the township I needed a note saying Dr recommended the shot. I thought it was what the Dr recommended for your specific child. children with any history of asthma or asthma type symptoms get the shot. I like that the shot was not a live virus.

We've always done the shots.
My husband did the flu mist at work this year, but he doesn't really care which.

We've always done the shots. My oldest has asthma and it's recommended that you not get the mist if you live with someone thats high risk because you can actually spread the flu when you get the mist.

Another plus the shot cannot make you sick it's a dead virus while the flu mist can because it's a live virus.

For that age, personally, I'd go with the shot. With the mist, they have to sniff it really deep and a shot just seems easier and faster. My 10 year old does the mist (she hates needles), but my 3 year old gets the shot.

For toddlers, it really doesn't matter. Whether you're poking them with a teeny needle or putting something up their noses, they're going to get ticked off about it.

Ask your pediatrician what they recommend. I have the flumist every year (military) with no problem. So do my boys.

I just had this issue this morning!! I asked what the doctor's office recommended for my 4 year old and they said they use the mist. My daughter was very wary and nervous it would hurt. They told her it would be like a raindrop in her nose. They did the first one and she giggled and had no problem with the second. I will go for that the next time for sure!!!

We've done both with my son (will be 4 in November) with no side effects from either. I tend to prefer the shot, but if the kiddo feels strongly about it, I could see going with the mist.
