Flu FOREVER!

My tot has had the flu for the last 10 days now, but she is getting slowly better. However, due to hardly eating, she is very weak, and I fear she will need to stay out of daycare next week as well (the 3rd week of not being in daycare!) just to get her strength back. Even now, she's not eating that much, but drinking lots of fluids. She has been examined by the doc, who said she had the flu.

Has anyone else's kid(s) also had the flu this long? This sure is a bad flu season! I was just reading it in the paper today, that they are saying this is the worst flu season in 2 years.

What can I do next?

You poor thing! I'm so sorry! I have not had my baby be sick with the flu as of yet (thank GOD) but my husband had it last year and I can tell you that even in an adult man it took him about 2 weeks to fully recover. I'm so sorry. Hang in there!

It's been going around here (Oak Park) too. Knocking on wood, my kids haven't had it. Someone just told me yesterday their child took 3 weeks to recover, and an older child (~9) down the block was hospitalized for a day or two. My neighbor's kids only took a week to recover, though.

I hope she's better soon! It does seem like a really bad flu season this year.

How about some Pedialyte popsicles? Soft foods like jello or applesauce work too. Just a little bit at a time. I'm glad she is feeling better, unfortunately, it can be a long road to recovery.

Hang in there!

My son had the flu in December for almost 3 weeks. He was actually throwing up for about 11 days, and after that slowly started getting better. I think you're doing the right thing by encouraging fluids. My doctor told me that they're little stomachs shrink a lot from not eating, and it takes a while for them to build back up to their normal appetite. He was finally eating like his old self after about 3 weeks. We had to go very slowly though, because the minute we would push a little extra, he'd throw it up. It was a long time, but he did recover! Good luck!

Flu can go on a long time. Mild flu ranges from body aches, fatigue, cold chills, fevers to throwing up/diahrea etc - we have had the mild flu symptoms of body aches and fatigue ... even the bronchitis part of it is lingering longer... best thing you can do is have him or her rest as much as possible and you too - so you do not get it! Rest, lots of videos - special foods like popsicles, fun chicken noodle soup, spaghettios - gatoraide, jello - anything in the BRAT diet works great for kids sick like that. I have my standard grocery list for when our house is plagued with illness like this...those are the things we like to eat mentioned above and are tolerated and relatively inexpensive. Hang in there!
