My 2.5 yo is complaining about a fish bone stuck in her throat. Can this be dangerous, do I let it run it's course or is there a quick fix or trick on getting it out?

What can I do next?

If it was for dinner and she is still complaining of it being in her throat, I would say it is stuck and not at a passing point. I think she needs medical help to prevent any damage in the throat. ER!

If she recently ate fish with bones in it, I would want a doctor to check it, quickly. If there is a rigid or sharp bone, trying to remove it or chase it down with other food could cause damage to her esophagus, painful and potentially serious.

If she is just complaining about a sensation "like a bone" stuck in the throat, that could possibly be some other problem, like acid reflux. If the problem persists, a doctor should check it.

Check her throat. I recommend if there is a fish bone stuck in her throat go get it taken out so it does not cut her throat. Have it checked out.

Good luck.

The home remedy is to eat bread which catches the fish bone and carries it on down. Fish bones are so small and flexible it's highly unlikely that it will do any damage. But if you're worried, call the advice nurse at an ER and ask.

I remember swallowing fish bones as a child, feeling paniced and my parents calming down, telling me it feels funny but it won't hurt, giving me a slice of bread to eat. I could still feel it and they told me to just wait awhile because the sensation can still be there even tho the bone is gone. Sure enough in a very short period of time I felt alright. I think I drank something while I waited but I'm not sure.

It's best if he/she sees a doctor. Toast bread eaten in chunks might help to push it down but getting the baby to do that can be impossible, so see a doctor.

This happened to my cousin. My aunt, who is a nurse, took her to the doctors to get it removed. They were able to numb her throat to make it more comfortable.

Good luck.

When this happened to us as kids, we were given a small ball of rice (quite moist) to swallow. I also know that there is a homeopathy medicine that dissolves fish bones.

You may want to take a look down her throat with a flash light. On our first camping trip with my son when he was 3 yrs old, he got a fish bone stuck in his tonsil. We were able to pull it out with a long tweezers from our first aid kit, and he was fine. Unfortunately, he remembers everything from when he was small, especially anything to do with food -- so he still worries about bones every time he eats fish!

I agree with the flashlight and tweezers. This happened to me about a year ago and my husband had to pull it out. The whole bread trick didn't work for me! But I was just fine after it was out...now with a toddler I am not sure if it will be possible to do this yourself...but give it a try and if not then you should go to the doctor...it may not come out on its own! Good luck...but don't panic cuzz either way you and wee one will be just fine!

My son at 2 years old had the same thing from a fish o-filet at McDonalds and it got stuck in his tonsil or ublia (sp?). His Dad (at the time) just got a tool like tweezers to pull it out. You seriously need to get it out of there and not just leave it. Other food can catch on it and maybe choke her. Hopefully it is gone by now.

Good luck!

Give her some bread and that should help it go down. A lot of people don't know this, but this is why hushpuppies or cornbread are frequently served with seafood entrees. Good luck!
