Hi Moms!

My husband and I are looking for any tips on traveling with a baby. We are taking our son to Mexico next month. It will be his first trip! He will be nearly 4 months old at the time. We've applied for his passport and are patiently waiting for it. Other than that, we need all the tips you can share - from the airport to the plane to the hotel (we are going to an all-inclusive in the Riviera Maya). FYI ~ I am breastfeeding and supplementing for feedings. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Have a great time, we love that area! We have the Graco travel set (stroller and car seat) and brought both on our trips, you can keep your son in the stroller through security all the way to the gate. If you choose to buy a separate seat for him, you can strap most car seats into the seat (you may want to check the airline to make sure yours will work), if you do not purchase a seat, the folks at the airline will check in the car seat and stroller just before you enter the plane and have them waiting for you when you exit the plane at landing. I travelled with my son when he was about 4 months the first time and I tried to purhase a plane ticket close to when he naturally napped. I also have an ultimate baby wrap that he used to love to sleep in. 30 min or so before the flight, I changed him, put him in the wrap, walked around and lulled him to sleep. I had a pacifier and bottle on hand for landing and take off- it helps them with ear pressure. Most young babies sleep on the plane as the 'white noise' sound of the engine lulls them.

I would assume the resort would have a crib, but you may want to check with them beforehand. I am not sure how the taxi's or shuttles work, but if you bring the carseat with you, it may make things easier. If you plan to have him in the sun at all, I would look at some sunscreens and test some on his skin before you go to make sure he is not allergic to it. A big bucket hat that has a velcro strap under his chin would be great to pack also.

Other than that, have a great time! It sounds like a lot of fun!

I traveled internationally with out daughter at that age and have learned a few things. Don't forget to bring the bottle brush and dishwashing detergent. Otherwise, you'll end up using shampoo (not recommended);) Ditto your special laundry detergent, just a small amount, in case you need to do a load. Make sure you have a bottle ready at take off to help compensate for changing air pressure, although a pacifier also seemed to work for take off and landing. In the airport, we used a Baby Bijorn and checked our car seat and stroller. The Baby Bijorn also helps if he will be on your lap during the flight. We bought a travel bag for the car seat to help keep it clean. Don't forget a portable manual breast pump and those extra little rubber diaphrams that go inside it. I found I supplemented more with formula during trips because sometimes it was inconvenient to breastfeed, and then if I didn't pump the girls, ouch!! Finally, try to find some sunblock type clothing for the little girl (better in my opinion than all that sunblock on sensitive skin), and bring your baby monitor for at night if you are planning to go downstairs for dinner (if you are comfortable with this). Just take your time when packing, and try to think through all the different scenarios--Enjoy!

Hmmm...take everything you can think of with you for him that you will have a hard time finding in MX? What will you do in MX if he gets sick...might prepare and have a plan for that just in case. Other than that all I can think of is protecting his eyes and skin from all that sun...and protecting his eyes from sand. The first time my daughter went to a beach she was 6 months old. She got sand in her swim diaper and it was in every little crack of hers. Her sensitive skin did not appreciate it. Since then, I haven't been big on the beach with my children while babies. I just personally don't have fun taking so much effort to keep them comfortable. But the pool is great!

BABY POWDER takes sand off skin.
WEARING baby makes for much less hassle of gear to carry.

I hated having the carseat on the plane, it seemed pointless as my little one wouldn't sleep in it after a couple of hours (long flight move from Maui to mainland), next time I flew I checked it. When mine slept, she just laid on seats next to me, more comfy that way.

We just got pack from puerto vallarta with our 3.5 month old. One big thing that was huge was that we brought the medela microwave bags. that way, we were able to sterilize anything we needed. I am nursing, but pump too, so it was a great way to sterilize the pump parts/bottles/pacifiers. I just used bottled water. A huge relief when you think about all of the potential danger. Good luck and have fun. Oh, also, our babe loves his bouncer so we brought it along. That way, he could still chill out in the hotel/by the pool, etc w/o being held the whole time.

bottled water in all things, (both you & baby), no fruits that have been washed in water (so things you eat just the inside of), your baby meds, your own diapers as they are very different there, don't let them get overheated or dehydrated....if its slightly warmer they could. Sand & babies don't mix, I agree the pool is better but make sure to wash the chlorine off, if there skin is sensitive to chlorine then bag balm is what we used for 2 years.....
naps for everyone (its vacation right?)
we would start to feed my son (his first flight was at 3 months) as soon as the plane started to take off, to help with pressure, often this would encorage them to fall asleep, we paid for the extra seat & took our baby seat, a way to change diapers if its turbulant & they won't let you go to the restroom, there is nothing worse then a screaming child, whos but is burning cause the diaper is dirty (especially if stinky) and they won't let you get up(trust me I though we were going to get thrown off the plane at 30,000 feet it was so bad), after that, we would take a mat and tons of wipes & extra bagies for the dirty stuff, one would hold, one would change......
