I'm planning my daughter's first birthday party and I was wondering if you guys have done/ heard of any fun local or international traditions for the event. I know she won't remember anything and she's too young to play big kid games, so the purpose of the 'game' may be to wish good luck or predict the future.

I found this great example online: Korea - table is set with four items; a pencil, a ruler, thread, and money. The baby chooses one item to forecast their future; excellent student, good with hands, long life or riches.

All ideas and suggestions are welcome! Thanks!!

I made a time capsule for each of my kids on their first birthday. I asked guests to write a note of blessing to them and put it in a sealed envelope to add to the time capsule. I plan to save it until they are older... graduate, married, first child, not sure exactly. They are still in the top of my closet. My kids are 7 & 8 now and I look forward to passing it on to them.

Good luck! L.

My husband is Korean so we do the traditional 1st Korean birthday with the traditional foods, wearing of the dol (first birthday Hanbok), etc. When I was a child my parents did a first birthday for us where they would invite all of their adult friends, have a separate small cake for us who were turning a year old and let us destroy that cake, etc. I don't know if you can call that a tradition or not.

When my daughter turned a year old, I bought a cake and it came with a "smash cake" which has always been traditional in my family!! :) My daughter LOVED putting her hands in it and getting all messy...though she wasn't sure what to do afterwards and was a bit confused :)
Another thing we did was just the normal invite the family over thing and the baby gets gifts (obviously). I really like the idea that you posted - I kind of wish I could of done that for my baby! I'm not really sure what to say besides the smash cake. I guess I pretty much just want to say happy birthday to your baby!!
Have fun!!!!!

I like the simple "1st taste of cake" tradition where you either give the baby a very large piece of birthday cake or a separate "smash cake" that a lot of bakeries supply. It's so much fun to see them just go nuts with it -eating it, smearing it, wearing it! GREAT photos!

The Korean tradition you speak of sounds really cool -I would do that!
