Fireplace Gates

One of the selling points to our house was that it has a fireplace. I would love to start burning wood but our daughter loves to play with it. It is flat to the hardwood floor, has about a foot of tile (or less) on the ground, and has a metal mesh curtain that closes. She likes to throw toys in there, or just mess with the mesh curtains. Of course her daddy and I try to stop her as much as we can, but sometimes she still gets to it. I am afraid, if I was to make a fire, I wont be quick enough.
I have googled fireplace hearth gates, and there is one from Kidco (I think) that got a lot of good reviews, but it was expensive (for me anyways). I don't mind spending the money for one, and I would keep it around for awhile (we want to have another baby in a few years so we would keep using it for that child too) so I *would* get my money's worth. I just wanted to see if anyone has actually used this gate? How does it look in person? Is it made well? Can a child open the door? Are there any cons to it? Is it strictly offline, or sold in stores (if so which stores)? Are there any other gates out there that you could recommend?
Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Inmy30'salready you nailed the reason why I am looking into it! I have known so many kids who got burned. Since it's so flush with the ground it wouldn't be hard at all for her to literally fall in there. We already had to remove some decorative feet that stuck up (like a pointy candle stick) because we were afraid she could trip and take her eye out. I really love the fireplace, but I am afriad to burn. I like the idea of making one, that way we could stain it the color of the mantel), not to mention it's cheaper. Anyone who suggested that can you tell me if the wood on the home made gate gets hot? And about how far away was the wood from the hearth? If I built it around the tile it would only be about a foot away from the hearth, not sure if I should extend it out a little more. Thanks everyone!!!

we made our own gate. "Picture frame" style for the 3 pieces (across the front of the hearth & 2 sides), which are attached together with hinges. We filled the frames with lattice. Been using the gate....really it's a fence!....for the past 8 years for my inhome daycare.

The ends of it are not attached to the wall. Instead we use furniture to keep it in place. This simple wooden style works well with our home filled with vintage & antique pieces.

I had my husband make one. it looked like a picket fence minus the pointy tops! our house is really old (100 in 2012) and has these crazy scrap hardwood floors, so we just nailed it right to the floor. you will probably want to anchor it to the walls. it was just your basic long in the front shorter on the sides build.

I had one. It was AWESOME! It is very durable. It has other uses. You can put it around a grill. I used it as a gate to divide a large room when we moved. It folds up when it is not in you use too. I would love another one. I don't need it yet but I am tempted to buy another anyway. LOL

Whatever you do, get something!

My hubby was burning one of those "flame logs" you can buy in the grocery store (while I was at work) and my then 2 yr old stuck his hand in and touched it! Serious burn! I had to take him to the Dr. Like 5 times so they could scrape it and clean it...oh, it was awful...he still has a wicked scar on his 2 first fingers...scary stuff!

Since yours is flush to the ground, Imagine if she were running and fell into the fireplace....oh, makes me shiver just thinking about it!

I just put a regular old baby gate up to keep our kiddos out of the fireplace when we aren't using it. When it's burning you watch them like a hawk anyway...I just needed to keep them out of it while it wasn't in use. I was sick of cleaning up lava rocks.
