My 8 month old son is in a phase where he will not eat anything purreed...he's happy with finger food type things, but what are some ideas of things to give him besides cheerios and diced, cooked veggies?

I've heard that babies resist meal times when they are learning to crawl.
Any tips on how to make him eat the purreed food? Or am I just plain out of luck?

How about just plain old table food? Babies can mash pretty well even if they only have gums. Baby food is just another way to make money in my opinion there is nothing superior about it, it is just processed food. Start with softer things like bananas & move up until the baby gets the hang of it. I did it with my 2 & they are super healthy.

We have a 9 month old who is the same way. We give him cut up bannanas, grapes, pears, dry toast, diced cheese and give him bites of what we are eating (as long as it is age appropriate). If his diet is a little boring...don't worry. He gets the nutrients he needs from formula(I think you are suppose to offer him formula before other food) . If he is still breastfeeding you may want to ask your Dr about vitamins. They may or may not be needed.

My daughter Kelli hated baby food so I cooked hot dogs and cut them up small and also added cut up cheese slices. She would only feed herself. She's now 23 and grew up fine! I would just recomend a multi vitamin to make sure they get all the nutrition that they need. Chewable or liquid, of course...L. F.

I wouldn't worry about vitamens. We asked our Dr about vitamins because our DS wouldn't eat any vegatable from 13 mths on. We'd offer them w/ every dinner he'd just take one look say no no and push it away. Our Dr said the cereals are so fortified that you don't need to worry about vitamins. Finger foods; ravioli (they have kid sized ones at whole foods), macaroni noodles w/ Prego, get those deep rubber spoons by gerber and try soup, cut up sweet potatoes, squash, carrots (try adding brown sugar if he won't eat plain some kids will go for that, but my DS won't even eat those.) Other ideas try Kix for cereal, it's just a little sweetened and kids really do love them. Cut up green beans, broccili, cauliflower, carrots, cucumber. Just expierment and make sure the peices are small enough.

M., hey if they want finger food, its ok to give it to them, just make sure they are really tiny so his little fingers can pick it up and also make sure he cant choke on it, hot dogs really really small, are good, mac and cheese chopped up is good, especially if you cook the noodles so they are bit over done, cut up whatever they should eat it, fruit, anything small, bits of potatoes, cut it all up, let him use his fingers, and have fun, D. s

Skip the baby food and go straight to the real stuff. Try everything and you'll be surprised at what he'll learn to eat. My kids will eat anything - Indian, Italian, Mexican, Thai...we just always gave them bits and pieces of what we ate, even spicy stuff, and they learned to like it. We also require them to take one bite of anything new - no matter what they might think of how it looks. (My toddler loves Stouffer's spinach souffle!) If we limit them when they are little they will never learn to engage the wonderful tastes of cultural diversity because of fear. It's like building a wall of bland around them (mac & cheese, Cheerios and yogurt) and convincing them they aren't able to handle anything outside that wall! But what about Korean food? Exotic fruits and vegetables? Artisan breads? If they don't learn to appreciate colors, textures and spices, as well as flavors, they will never be able to fully engage in the amazing world we live in, which is often defined by the foods we eat.

SAHM of seven, 23yrs - 21 mos, 3 bio/4 adopted. We're a rainbow family that loves good food. My older children have comfortably traveled the world because they were not afraid to try something new - including escargot, fried egg pizza and unpronounceable vegetables!

I think it's gerber graduates they have a lot of good little finger food stuff for them, it should be right by the baby pured foods. My son loved the ravioli in all the flavors, he'd eat them cold or warm. I know they've come out with more different things since my son ate them. That may be something to look in to.

We started my son on table food at 9 months and once he got a taste of it, he would no longer eat any purreed food or baby food. He is now 11 months and for finger foods we have given him fruit, veggies, cereal, puffs, cinnamon toast, toast with jelly, pastas, mac and cheese, grilled cheese, shredded cheese, anything as long as its cut up small enough so he dont choke. Even at 11 months we still cut up food smaller and he has 6 theeth. If we dont he will shove it all in his mouth and start gagging. Just give him a little at a time and see how he does. Good luck!
