Hi- I had fifths disease when I was in middle school. I just rememebr it being very itchy and taking a while to go away. I feel bad, that must be tough with a little one. Good luck!
My 13 month old daughter was diagnosed with Fifth Disease a week ago Sunday, every day since then her rash as grown worse. Currently the rash covers her entire body and is the worst on her face. In the past 24-36 hours the rash has become itchy (especially on her face) and nothing seems to help. Has anyone experienced Fifth Disease? Any suggestions for easing the itch and discomfort would be welcomed. Thank you.

Hang in there!
It looks worse then it is! Good old fashioned Benadryl at nap time and bedtime helps with the itch a lot it seems. The rash becomes raised and rough but that's because it's actually on the down side of the virus. My oldest had it and I did too-I taught pre-school for 12 years and caught everything!
My whole family got Fifth's Disease about 4 years ago. I truly thought I might die - my fever reached 105.4 . My daughters never got as high - around 101, 102. I wish I could say I had a good tip for the itch, but I don't. I mainly just wanted to tell you that my rash actually lasted 6 months - so don't be surprised if her rash doesn't seem to go away for a long time, although I never got the rash on my face (and I don't know why, but I didn't think that you did get a rash on the face with Fifth's disease). It did not remain terribly itchy that whole time, however. I wish you the best of luck and health!
Hi! Both my daughters had it bad when they were younger it went around the daycare like wildfire. The only thing that worked was Aveeno oatmeal bath and then the calming lotion. I got it from the dr as a sample and surprisingly it was the only thing that helped. All of a sudden it was gone. Good luck, hope no one else in your house gets it.
My ten month old daughter has it. Her doctor recommended us to use Aveeno oatmeal bath treatment and Aveeno calming lotion. She also advised me to give her 1/2 tsp of benadryl every six hours. I hope she gets better soon. We were sent to the childrens hospital on Tuesday because my daughter was so sick with the fever and body aches that they thought she was showing common signs of meningitis. Turns out, she has fifth disease. I did the oatmeal bath an hour ago and plan to do it again tonight. It seemed to soothe her skin a LOT! After she was done I lathered her up with the calming lotion, gave her benadryl and a nap. The dr also said to make sure her bath water was cool and to keep my house cool. I hope this helps!!
IF it is the same thing...odd, I havent heard of Fifth's disease for years and years...it is caused by a virus, spread by coughing or some such respirtory contact...has the rash, I am not sure, it has been so many years since I knew about it, but it seems I remember something like joint pain and one other thing, it is dangerous to pregnant women.
Seems I recall it would pass in a couple weeks and tylenol can help with the pain.
I do not remember if it is a condition that stays in your body and recurs.
Only that there is a rash, first on the cheeks, looks like the child has been slapped...happens mostly to children five and under in years...dont remember itching sypmtoms...but I expect a wash with pine tar soap would help with that...or bit of vinegar rubbed on the rash and that it passes in week or two.
This isnt much help , is it? Sorry about that. It used to be more common...caused by panovirus maybe? Most people have antibodies to the particular virus that causes it I think.
Perhaps the child's doctor has an ointment that would help with the itch...I tend to old fashioned remedies with good results.
Well, lets hope it passes quickly.
Best wishes and God bless

benedryl helps... and time :)
a little hydrocotrisone cream might help w/ the itching we use it on my son's face when his eczema gets really bad and he also has benedryl to take when his eczema gets very bothersome but I would check w/ your pediatrician on the exact dose to give her because it goes by weight.
Hi. Luckily we have never had it, but my nephews had it and were just getting over it at my wedding, so one of my friends couldn't come, because she was pregnant at the time. I think it is just dangerous during the first trimester for pregnant women, but most women that I know try to avoid it throughout. I believe it starts on the trunk then works its way out, so hopefully that means your daughter is on the tail end of it. The redness stays for quite a while. I would recommend Aveeno. It has the oatmeal in it and eased the symptoms of a rash I had when I was pregnant with my son.
My son got it in preschool. If I remember correctly the sun and the warm bath water make it worse. I think I used hydrocortizone during the day and benedryl before bed. It lasted a few weeks. Your family should stay away from pregnant women. I know it can be dangerous to the unborn child. My son had it over a holiday and we could not celebrate with my sister inlaw because she was pregnant. Just thought I would mention that.
