Mamas & Papas -

Any suggestions for a fiber supplement for DS? He's 17 months old, and leans towards constipated. I don't want to get anything that is gritty, or tastes awful.

Thanks,
F. B.

My twins are 17 months old and one of them gets severe constipation on a regular basis. I make her my Magic Oatmeal.

Handful each of prunes, dried apricots, raisins, dried cranberries
One apple, cored
1/2 cup brown sugar
one cup rolled oats
three cups milk

You can chop the apple and dried fruit into small bits and put in the oatmeal. Slow cook in milk until desired consistency. If it gets too thick, you can add water. Stir frequently to avoid scorching the bottom.

Takes great and a little goes a long way! :-) I make this large batch and freeze in smaller portions so it's on hand when needed.

When my little one was that age we were told to mix Miralax into her drinks. It dissolves well and has no taste. We were told to use 1/4 capful in her drink.

I give my kids those FiberOne bars and they swear they're eating candy bars! But they work! They keep the kids regular and help them out!

Good luck!

I second the vote for miralax. We really struggled with constipation with my daughter and I was really hesitant to give it to her. But, our ped told me to think about it as no different than giving her a salad. She also said she had been at a meeting recently with other pediatricians where the consensus was that it is harmless and way better than a child dealing with painful bm's. Anyway, we give it to her in her cup of milk in the morning and it has changed her/our life. Good luck!

Brown rice. Raspberries. Oatmeal. (Oatmeal w/ raspberries! - that was my breakfast this morning!) Pears, peaches, mangoes, blueberries (mashed in his hot cereal, if he eats that). Fruit smoothies made with those fruits.

Hi,
Just thought it might help to know that he should avoid white rice and chocolate, both of which make matters worse. I shudder to think how many things we tried to add to my child's diet and at the same time I was feeding her cocoa rice krispies for breakfast! Actually, I really shudder to think we fed her that kind of cereal at all!!!! Best of luck.

Of course it goes without saying that eating foods high in fiber is the first choice but if that isn't possible then Arbonne's fiber booster can be added to any food or drink it is grit free, tasteless and odorless. (My teen granddaughter was having issues I sprinkled it on her pancakes and she didn't even know) Be sure whatever you choose to do that he drinks plenty of water. I will PM you my contact info so you can check it out.

To add to the responses you've already received, I just wanted to suggest that you make sure he is drinking a sufficient amount of water (or other liquid). My son leaned toward constipation when he was a toddler - we fed him lots of food that were supposed to help, but ultimately realized that he simply wasn't drinking enough during the day - he hated drinking water. Once we realized this, we began giving him heavily-diluted juice several times a day, and the problem resolved.

I would not use a fiber supplement on a child. These supplements can get hard and block the intestines and colon if the child (or anyone) does not drink enough water. This makes the situation worse.

Fresh fruits and veggies, oatmeal, whole grain breads, will give them a lot of fiber. But this is a larger issue than just getting enough fiber, you need to look at the entire diet. Children will sometimes become constipated by dairy products, cheese being the biggest issue here but just milk will do it too. If anyone gets too much processed foods and little fresh foods they will get constipated. Also we need water--fluids daily. As adults we need 2 quarts of liquids daily.
