Infections need antibiotics, cold viruses and allergies do not. Some times you get a fever with a cold, but not always. A child who had a cold, or allergies, and later develops green discharge and fever should see a doctor to see if they have a secondary infection that requires antibiotics.

Often allergies can lead to a sinus infection which then can produce fever. I have also heard of severe allergies causing a low grade fever i.e. Hayfever

I would ask the dr or see a Ear, nose and throat specialist. That is the only way you will know for sure.

Why did she get an antibiotic for a cold? My youngest sometimes gets a fever with allergies when she has an asthma attack but I don't know if that is becasue of her asthma.

It sounds like allergies since it's been so long. My son (7) and I who have a hard time with allergies both tend to get sinus infections from them. For him it causes a fever, but not always. Then again, he's had ear infections that have burst the ear drum with no fever. I think it varies. You might try a Neil Med nasal rinse and see if that helps her. She won't like the process, but she'll probably like the results. GL!

Single sneezes--cold
Multiple sneezes in a row--allergy
Are his eyes watery & itchy? Allergy
Is his nose itchy? Allergy
Allergy "salute" present? (palm of hand against the nose) Allergy.

My son has massive snot--like ALL winter. I think it's a mixture of cold after cold plus a bit of allergy thrown in. If he has a fever, I know it's a sign of a sinus infection. He's been like this since he was 3. make sure his ears are checked as well, as either a cold or a sinus infection can get to the ears.

Hi---allergies are a problem with the immune system. It is overactive and concerned with things that will not cause the body harm. To balance the immune system, eat a plant based diet, that is, 90% of daily calories should come from plants. These provide the vitamins, minerals and tens of thousands of phyto (plant) chemicals that allow the body to function properly. Be sure to eliminate negative ingredients, which is usually most processed foods. HFCS, MSG, artificial colors, flavors and preservatives do not aid the body in any way, and who knows what the combination of them do in a vulnerable body.

If you have problems eating lots of fruits and veggies, (it is recommended we eat at least 10 servings every day, and have those be as wide a variety of possible including lots of different darkly colored foods) I have some great strategies to help. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to know more. Good luck, D.

Edit: Eating this way also strengthens the immune system to help prevent colds and the flu, as well as cancer and other degenerative diseases.
