I have a 2 year old daughter (she will be 3 in January). Ever since she was about 6 months she has struggled with allergies. She is on daily meds to help control them but she is still consistently getting sick. About every 6-8 weeks she comes shows up with a fever (sometimes very high for 5-7 days). Usually accompanied by a horribly sore throat (that is NEVER strep but looks like it). She doesn't complain of much more except in the last 6 months or so her legs have been hurting her. I think that is probably growing pains but ??? Any suggestions? I know kids get viruses alot but 6-8 times a year???? HELP! Any ideas on what could be causing this re-accurance?

What can I do next?

Whe she had the fevers, has your pediatrician ever done bloodwork to determine whether it is viral or bacterial? That can make a big difference in knowing why its happening. Bloodwork isn't routinely done when a child has a fever, but in cases where they need to know the cause, a quick CBC (blood count) can determine bacterial vs. viral. If its bacterial, it would make sense- kids with allergies have a lot of drainage, which can turn into an infection. In this case, getting allergies under control can fix that. BUT, if its viral, then it isn't related to the allergies. That would be immune related. Have you expressed your concerns to your pediatrician? If he/ she is doing their job well, they should address this until you have an answer.

They have found that sinus infections can cause widespread pain. I'd also recommend having her screened for celiac disease. Both my sons complained of joint pain from about that age. Dr. said it was growing pains. We didn't learn until they were 8 and 10 that it was celiac. Pain is due to lack of absorption of essential fats and minerals important for bone and joint health. Also, the constant infections are a sign of poor immune function. The infections can trigger celiac and once celiac is triggered the immune system is compromised.

Also, if the daily meds your daughter is on are steroidal, then that could be the root of her problems. Steroids suppress the immune system thus she will be prone to get just about every infection to which she is exposed. I have bad allergies and found that out while on prednisone and nasal steroids. The better approach for the allergies are herbs and homeopathic treatments and preventative measures like no carpet in her bedroom, no curtains, no stuffed animals in her room, HEPA filter, no windows open at nite in her room and doing an elimination diet for food allergies. Most anyone with airborne allergies has food allergies.

I would also honestly consider whether you have ever been exposed to Lyme disease - i.e., have you spent lots of time outdoors - in particular in the East or West coasts or mountainous areas. Your daughters symptoms sound like mine when I was about 10 and got Lyme disease when living in Newport News Virginia. The Lyme bacteria can be passed from the mother to the fetus - this has been discovered through biopsies of umbilical cords and from miscarried fetuses.

I will also note that it is quite possible for her to have all 3 of the problems I note above - I do and they can all be managed with alot of vigilence and being very pro-active in protecting her health by strengthening her immune system.

Actually toddlers can get sick 6 to 10 times a year because thier immune system isn't fully matured yet. and alot of times its because of viruses in her environment and because there is so many and they spread so fast especially if she is around other children or other adults who are sick she can get sick fast so I think the best thing to do is sanitize everything and unfortunately let her ride it out just keep her nose clear and warm fluids might help with her sore throat. You can also see if your family can get flu shots that helps alot too.

Is your child in day care? If so this is the cause to all your issues. They could not be sending kids home when they are ill so the sickness just travels forever within everyone. If she is in day care, has your own child been sent home for a sickness? This is how you can monitor if they are really been strict on the send a child home when sick for 24 hours thing. If not in day care and stays at home, then there are other things you can try. Sleep with a humidfer. Take her for allergies test with doctor. She could be allregic to something in the house. A pet, plant, soap or even foods. Allergic reactions can cause her symptoms. Parents think its only allergic when the throat closes up and you are rushing to the ER. Thats not true. It can cause your allergies to flare up. I like to give kids Zyrtec. But you have to give this every night before bed. Since it works for 24 hrs. Then she will be set for the AM. Use a lysol in the house and no perfumes.
If child is in day care...I still say this is your issue. You will need to find a new school if they are not sending children home when they are ill. You said even your daughter has had fevers...has she been sent home?
good luck

Consider going to an ENT; she may need to have her tonsils and/or adenoids out. My 5 yr old kept getting mysterious fevers and they determined it was an infection in her adenoids (after hospitalization and lots of tests). Allergies could be the start of each infection (drainage). I highly recommend Dr. Tim Trone at Medical City; I think they have an office in Plano now. good luck.
