Hi moms,
My 6 year old (his birthday is Sunday so this is not good timing!) has been running a fever near 102 most of the afternoon and evening and has some congestion & stuffiness. I've been giving him Tylenol and tonight gave him Tylenol Cold (Stuffy Nose) before bed. Des anyone have any advice on what else I can do to help him through this? I've been pushing fluids/popsicles/water/rest etc. He does not have much of an appetite and my philosophy has always been "when you're sick, you get to eat whatever you want, whenever you want" but that's not been much today. What the heck is this? He doesn't have an upset stomach/vomiting/diarrhea/sore throat...just the fever. any suggestions? Thank you!

What can I do next?

He may have a sinus infection or something. I'd call the doctor. Keep up with the fluids, etc. But watch his temp.
Just call the doctor!

Hi Denise,

My three year old daughter recently had similar symptoms. I took her to the doctor after a couple days of her fever continuing to return to 102 or higher when the Tylenol wore off. It turned out she had a double ear infection. She never once complained that her ears hurt, so I was totally surprised.

Denise,

I feel your pain. My daughter has missed 8 days in the last few weeks of school. She started with strep, then had flu-like symptoms (with a fever) and her symptoms now seem to be more cold-like. We've been to the doctor twice...not that this helps you...but to tell you that the doctor said there is a LOT going around now and most of it is stuff that you can only treat symptomatically...gotta just wait for it to run its course...and sorry to say...the doctor said the fevers have been lasting 5-7 days. My daughter has had hers for 6 now (though it's lower than it was earlier in the week.) I've been giving my daughter jello, ginger ale and gatorade...and when the headache pain is severe (as hers has been) I've been giving her tylenol + motrin. They can have both since it's different ingredients. I would say let him get as much rest as possible. My daughter has had a few days in the past few weeks where she's slept 16 hours...and this is still hanging on...

Good luck.

take him to the doctor. if he has a fever he could have and infection of some sorts. i took my son to the doctor and he has a double ear infection. he was stuffy, fever and a runny nose. he kept screaming every so often. it is harder for me because he is 20 months old and i can not ask him what hurts. He could also have the flu. if he runs a fever for more than a day i would take him to the doctor or the hospital. run a cool humidifier. keep him elevated when he sleeps. good luck

Hi there,

my son had the same thing, when he was about 14 months old. We finally went to the emergency room, because the fever even climbed higher. They figured out, that he had pneumonia. There were NO other symptoms. The only clue we had was about two weekes earlier, he had vomited only O. time at night, which wasn't even much. He apparently inhaled a tiny little bit, which caused the pneumonia. Just a thought.

Good luck, S.

My son just got over that. He just turned 6 too. I gave him Tylenol melt aways every 4 or so hours. I gave him ginger ale which he thought was the best thing ever because he never gets pop and gave him baths every night to try and cool him down and wash the germs a way. Plus at night I put Vick's Vapor Rub on the bottoms of his feet. I know you put it on the feet for infants, but it worked for him too. He didn't eat very much either, but within a week or so his appetite was back. Hope this helps. A mother of 2 boys soon to be 3.

Poor lil guy. I know strep throat and some type of flu bug has been going around. Sounds like hes fighting off something. Maybe a humidifier and vics on his chest, good old fashioned chicken soup. I'm sure hes getting all the love and care he needs from you. Good luck, I hope he gets better soon.

Vicks on feet at nite really does help stop coughing if you need it, and my brother read something about egg whites or yolks on feet to lower fever. He said he tried it on his son and it worked for him!

We just had this exact same bug...except my kids went up to 104.8 temperature. It was terrible :( Jello was a big hit with my little ones. I did lots of cool washcloths on their head. It eventually landed in just a cough but took a few days for the fever to pass. Poor little guy, i hope he feels better for his birthday!

Hi Denise, it sounds like we had the same thing. Both of my kids had the fever off and on for 2-3 days. It then just turned into a cold and a wretched cough! Their appetites came back after a couple of days also. If it's more than 3 or so days I'd take him to the doctor. I just kept giving them Tylenol for the fever. Good luck!

This thing was around last winter and again this winter. The fever last for about 3 days. The do not feel like eating much and they are tired. If the fever is more then 3 days take them to the doctors. Both my sons had it and O. turned into phuemona. If this started on thursday he should be better by sunday. Keep him on tylenol for the fever. Hope he feels better for his birthday.

Denise, my house is full of this too! Doctor told us it is the flu(and my kids got the flu shots). For the congestion, rub him with Vicks, run a humidifier and use saline nasal spray. Treat his fever with Tylenol alternating with Motrin (if you give Tylenol at 10 and fever is still up at 12, you can give him Motrin). A steamy shower helps with congestion ad aches. Don't worry about his eating, he'll be ok,just continue to watch his fluid intake. When a child has a fever it increases his chances of becoming dehydrated. I also believe in airing out the house. I opened all bedroom and bathroom windows, but closed the doors so the cool air didn't affect my children. Unfortunately, we moms have to ride it out. If he gets worse or it seems to be going into his chest, take him to doctor. Good luck and I'll keep you guys in my prayers.

Hi Denise
Sounds like a virus. My son has the same thing. It started with a fever, then turned into a cold. I have been using the vicks baby rub and a humidifier at night. His fever should subside in a few days, but if it doesn't, a doctor's visit is in order. I also like those vicks plug ins. It is horrible when they are sick. I hope he feels better soon.

Hi Denise, Have you ever considered taking your child to the doctors. Fevers are a idicator that something is wrong
There are a lot of germs going around and kids are as well as adults are coming down with upper respiratory infection
Tylenlol will only masked the symptoms. You need to take the time and have your child checked out. All the other things you are doing will helped, but maybe its not enough if you keep doing the same thing you've been doing and no change, you will keep getting the same without results. Get your child checked out fever can get out of control, thats not good. Once you've got all the answers you can proceed better and get a good night's sleep because you have invested in your son. P.S. and buy a vaporizer to help break down secretion and help your so breath easier. R.
