Mamas I need some help! So my son all of the sudden came down with a fever. He refuse to take any liquid meds and if I force him they come right back up, it's not worth the fight, crying & puking. I bought the walgreens fever reducer meltaways but they are more like chewables and he's not really taking them.. So my questions are: has anyone tried the Tylenol brand meltaways or target brand do they really melt away? Second question is how often should I check his tempature durning the night? Right now he is fresh out of a cool bath, drink plenty of fluids and has a cooling patch on!! I'm kinda glad he got sick now since I'm off weekends and can really take care of him.
Thanks mamas!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice! I did crush up the melt aways with a small amount of water and had him take them that way. He slept with me, I was too scared his fever would rise and I wouldn't notice, he's 3 almost 4 but he has had a febrile seizure when he was 6 months. Thankfully he went all night with no fever! Thanks again for all the advice I always get so nervous when he gets fevers.

If you have to smash up the meltaways and put them in juice and let him drink that. He won't know the difference. Tell him that he has to drink lots of liquids and call the doctor if it increases or doesn't go away! Better safe than sorry!

Ok, first make sure the bath water is only a few degrees cooler than their temp, you could make the fever worse if you give a cool bath. If he is not terribly horrible with the fever you can allow it to work itself out. I tend to check every few hours by touch and then proceed further if he feels too hot.

Love the meltaways... My almost 10yo had that horrid fever thing too (103.+ at the worst of it) and a sore throat. He could literally suck on the meltaways like candy. So the kids can either chew them up, suck on them (they don't last long) or even split it in half and stick under the tongue.

Hope your son gets better soon... Although it shouldn't take more then 3-4 days. Mine son just happened to get a secondary infection on top of the virus. :/

There is a suppository now - for children who have issues with taking meds by mouth. Call your local Walgreens/Walmart/CVS/whatever Pharmacies you have in your area to see if they carry it.

You live in SFO go to the store and get Occillococciunum made by Boiron.
Follow package directions exactly. It is a widely used homepathic remedy for flu and viral illnesses. There is no age limit. It's an old and well tested remedy.
I've used it for more than 15 years. No house should be without it in the medicine cabinet.

My son also wont take the liquid tylenol, so I bought a medicine dropper and I use it to squeeze the medicine out towards his throat so he doesnt even taste it.

If it is under 100...I wouldnt give anything. Fevers are a good thing. His body needs it to fight off what ever it is that is causing the fever.

If it goes over 100. Then I would try a bit harder to get medicine into him.

As long as it doesnt go over 101...It is not truly dangerous. Anything over 101, for more then an hour can become an issue. Keep a cool compress near him.

Dont bundle him up. Keep him in loose fitting pj's.

Honestly if its high enough to try and give him medicine, I would get up maybe every hour to check it. If it seems to be going down, you sont need to get up more then twice. If it stays the same, or goes up call the on call doctor too see what they recommend.

They could tell you too but baby in luke warm bath...that is sort of the last straw with trying to get it to go down:)

Good luck and I hope it doesnt last long.

We use the generic ("compare to Tylenol") meltaways, and they are wonderful. They do dissolve very quickly, and taste like candy (at least my daughter says so) She does not like the bubblegum, though, just grape.

Disolve the melt-aways in some juice or gingerale then have him drink it.
