I am having Long Fence come out to give me a quote on a deck and fence next week, Our neighbors have a fence on one side of us, so I don't see the need to put a side up over there. We don't touch their fence as it is now, all that did was make more work for my husband to weedwack. So I don't plan to get a quote with that side included. Will that start WW3? They have more than enough money and we'll need to finance this, but I'm so tired of not being able to enjoy my backyard like I want to. Would you be livid if someone did that? I also know other poeple on our street that have done that and it's been okay.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks. I guess a few people in my neighborhood have made other families mad by doing this. I know my parents have a 6ft privacy fence and their neighbors (and best friends) only did 3 sides, but their dogs keep breaking it and they claim it is my parents dogs (they have 150 pound dogs and my parents are MAYBE 20). Either way, my husband reminded me that the neighbor commented that if we ever wanted to put a fence up we could just pay them back for half of that side. I'd rather put my own up, but I do think it is silly to put up another side right there. We'll see if the price is right, but I'd definitely rather just have 3 sides and save money.

I always assumed it was the norm everywhere but if the fence is on the property line everyone adds to the existing fence. I would actually think my neighbors were crazy if they put a fence next to mine. For one can you imagine the weeds that would grow in that small gap between the fences and god knows how you would get to them. :-/

So far all sides of my fence have been used by someone. I had always hoped I would be the last fence to go in, you know the lucky person who only has to put the two side bits next to their house.

It wouldn't bother me if my neighbor connected their fence to mine instead of having 2 fences parallel to eachother with what? one foot of space in between. I think it would be nice to talk to your neighbor 1st though. The other thought that popped into mind is you might want to check if there are any zoning laws that would prevent that.
Good luck :)

My home has a 6 ft privacy fence - it is *the* fence for my 3 neighbors. Their fences butt up to mine - but there is no need for them to build a wall of fence parallel to mine which borders our properties.

I think this is standard practice.

Good Luck

You question is confusing. Are you asking if the neighbor will be mad that you fence your own yard in? If they already have a fence around their yard, why would they care? I'm not understanding this.

No, I think that's common when you share a fence.

Anyway, it's not their business what you do with your other 3 sides.

I, too, don't understand your question. If the neighbor has already put up a fence on one side why would you put up another fence? You may need to talk with them about connecting your fence to theirs depending on how it's arranged. I don't see how that would be a problem, either.

Our fence on 2 sides is shared with neighbors. When we re-did our iron fence that we share on one side of the house, we split the costs.

Most everyone in our neighborhood does it that way. We share on the other side as well and that neighbor, although very nice family, can also afford it but he is Mr. El Cheapo and he is waiting on us and his other neighbor to remodel so he spends no money. We can all afford to re-do the fence, he is just cheap and if we re-do and the neighbor on his other side has a re-do, then all that's left for him to ante up is the back portion.

If you share the fence, I would at least talk to them. Don't spring it on them or they might take it the wrong way. We communicate with our neighbors almost daily and we are on large lots with a lot of privacy. You are friends or at least neighborly, right?

I think it's pretty common to just put up enough fence to fence the rest of your yard. I would only do 3 sides. They knew when they put their fence up that could happen and if they're mad about it, that's just nuts. I doubt it will be an issue.

You need to know where the the property line lays. If their fence lies within their property you can not hook up to the fence with out their permission. Ours lies inside our property line and yes I would be mad if someone hooked up with out permission. And we had a neighbor that tried and we put a stop to it right away, we have drain that runs the outside of fence to protect the neighbor of water run off, and we are just not interested in having to fight to keep our property up to our standards. Although my hubby cares more than I do but it diffently has its benefits. I do not have to worry about my dog and neighbors. etc.

Best thing to do is talk to you neighbor and have some come out and mark the property if you don't have markers already to find out where you stand.
