I had the scare of my life last weekend when my 9 mth old infant woke me up crying feebly. I found her stiff, ashen color with blue lips and extremities. IT turned out she had a very bad urinary tract infection. She is now on the road to recovery (thankfully) but due to her young age the doctor wants to do a renal ultrasound and a vcug at Texas Childrens. I am worried about how she will handle the vcug. Has anyone else ever experienced this with their young child? I felt like an idiot not realizing my child had a urinary infection and thought her low grade temp and not eating for 4 days was due to teething (she's getting 6 teeth at the same time!!). Here she was septic due to a uti and I thought she was going to die!! We ended up calling 911 because she was blue. I was never so scared in my life. She's on medicine now and doing better. I'm just worried about the renal tests the doc has ordered for her and want to know if any other moms have been thru this.

What can I do next?

My daughter was 7 mos. old when she had her tests done too.
they were really amazing in texas children with her.
the ultrasound is no big deal, the vcug is pretty uncomfortable but the nurses are really good at their job.
my daughter cried when they inserted the catheter but afterwards was ok. They tried their best to distract her and reassure her. I was told that if one kid has it then the other children need to be tested too. My daughter is a twin, so her brother was tested too but was fine.

they do the testing to check if there's damage to the kidneys and if there's urinary reflux of the bladder.
There are 5 stages with 5 being the most severe. my daughter has stage 4. We are doing another round of tests in june (she's 19 mos. now). If it hasn't healed on its own then a minor procedure will have to be done.
good luck.
hope the info was helpful.

Don't feel bad, many moms miss the UTI symtoms, especially when they can be attributed to teething or other things, I did too! My daughter had to have the VCUG and ultrasound as well because of her age. I was nervous even though I perform these same exams, except on adults! My daughter was a little older so it was a little rough because she was very aware but the staff at TCH were wonderful with her and very patient. I also requested that she be given medication to relax her because she is a very headstrong little one when she does not want to do something and I did not want to tramatize her for any future visits to the hospital if the occasion would arise. Her pedi prescribed it along with the orders for the exams. The ultrasound goes quickly 9if she is still which is hard for a little one) and the VCUG test is quick itself, just the preparing and that kind of thing takes longer. I won't go into detail if they already explained the test but they do this on young children on even just one UTI because they are looking to make sure that it is not a chronic condition where the urine is refluxing back into the kidneys. If it is, then they need to catch it early so it does not do damage over time. My neice had the VCUG and was positive for reflux so they put her on an antibiotic once a day for a year and at her next VCUG, she was fine. It seems like a major thing but if they catch it and treat it, it will be just fine in the long run. I hope this helps a little bit! I know it can be scary but once they explained why she must have it done after just one UTI, I was quickly on board, especially seeing patients with long term kidney disease that was untreated (I am talking over a life time, not a few days). She will do great and never even remember it!

B. I am so sorry you are having to go through all this, but the tests are relatively simple. My daughter (who is now 3) had this done when she was 10 months old. They sedated her for the vcug but she was just fine. And the ultrasound is very simple and quick. It was definitely harder on me and my husband than our daughter. The biggest lesson I learned was to never bathe a girl in a bubble bath which I never knew (probably the reason she was having the uti's). Better to have the tests done to be sure nothing is anatomically causing the infections. Good luck!!

Chastity gave some wonderful advice, so I am only going to add that Texas Children's Hospital is the best place your daughter could have been sent. The people there are wonderful and loving, and will be very sensitive to your needs as well as your daughter's needs. They will be very thorough in answering all your questions as they arise! She will be in very good hands there. I love that place, and so does my son!

B., I'm glad to hear your girl is doing better. Yes she does need these tests and Texas Children's is one of the best. We have been going there for the last 3.5 years, same thing my now 3.5 yr old girl has had several operations and these same tests several times - since she was born. She did not like them at all but they let you be there with them holding/talking to them while they do them and they really try to go very fast to get it over with. The UTI's are very hard to detect, my girl has had several and has just been able to go off medicine since her last operation went so well. Since your infant had such a bad one she might get more. We always took our girl in as soon as any sign of one came up. Good Luck!
