is it ok to feed a 4 month old the gerber bannanas ?
My son now 5 months has been eating solids for about 3 weeks now. I started him when the doc said it was ok and he just kept watching us eat so I thought it was time. He weighed 17lbs 26.5in at 4 months. I breastfeed him and supplement formula, because I dont produce enough milk. However I started him on rice cereal and he got a rash from that so I started him on veggies and fruit. I started off switching food every 2 days, green then orange veggies after none of those bothered him I did the same with fruits. He hasnt had any reaction to anything I've givin him. I was reading another request and read you should feed them the same food for about a week to see if they have a reaction to it should I try doing that or would I know if one of them bothered him. I now just give him a fruit in the morning and veggies at lunch and dinner. Any input would help. I do still breastfeed as well!

Stay with one food for about three days so you will know if he has a reaction to something. I would try oatmeal ceral though.
My daughter is abou t4 1/2 months i had the same pronblem as you actually breastfed but did not produse enough milk so i supplimented with formuls . my daughter got sick and had a rash as well so we consulted in my pediatricin they said she has a milk/soy protein allergy so now that she's gettin to big from the formula alone i started her on solids i actually find that the applesauce, pears, and banans are great but give one then maybe 3 days later give a diffenert kind to make sure you know what works and what doesnt .I recently started her now on vegis like sweet potatoe, carrots, any orange vegi but dont try any green vegis for atleast 2-3 more months. hope everything goes well with you
i would feed him the same for at least three days, it takes about that long for an allergy to show up if its just mild. i suggest that because my son is very allergic and never showed any signs as i fed him baby food so the longer they stay on one the better chance you have of knowing ahead of time so you can avoid having them stuck with needles in the long run.
I think the general rule is to wait 3 days before introducing a new food. Although, I must confess that I really didn't follow that rule. Luckily my daughter hasn't reacted to anything. One of her first foods that she loved is mashed sweet potato. I introduced rice cereal to her later because I read that some babies can be allergic to it. I did either an oatmeal or whole grain cereal. I can't remember which. I also bought Ruth Yaron's book called Super Baby Foods. It's a bit strict so I haven't followed it to the letter but it's been a nice reference book.
As long as you've been keeping track of what you've introduced, go ahead and continue what you're doing. I said wait a week simply because it's an easy way to keep track, gives time to see if there's a reaction, and gives baby the same food a few times in a row before moving on. It can take 10-20 times introducing a new food for a child to actually begin to like it! It's also a new thing for his little tummy to adjust to, so it's good to take it slowly and give his body time to adjust as well. As for the cereal, you could try the infant oatmeal instead of the rice to see if that bothers him. But remember, too, that breastmilk is nutritionally complete for the first year, so there's really no hurry to get all the foods in.
As for not having enough milk, there's a website dedicated to helping you increase your supply, and also hooks moms up with those who have too much milk and are willing to donate. It's www.milkshare.birthingforlife.com. Also, fenugreek tea is said to help, as well as pumping/nursing every 2 hours for a day or two. Drinking lots of water is important. You could also check out www.breastea.com.
Good luck!
Hi J.-
Have you tried the baby oatmeal instead of the rice? I ended up switching my son to oatmeal after problems with constipation. It will fill him up more if you give him a cereal in addition to the fruits/veggies. You may want to stick with the fruits and veggies you have been giving and then add one new fruit or veggie. Stick with that for about 3 or 4 days to make sure there will be no allergic reaction. Then just continue to add them that way.
