Feeding Issue with 9 Mo Old

I just took my daughter for her 9 mo check up, and totally forgot to ask this question, so I thought I'd get your input here! She is doing well with breastfeeding as well as table foods. When she started some solids around 6-7 mo of age, I discovered that she becomes HORRIBLY constipated with bananas. I'm talking no BM for 3-4 days then screaming all day while she pushes out rock hard pellets until I give her a suppository to loosen things up. Needless to say it only took 2x of this happening to confirm that yes, bananas are the issue, and I've been afraid to try them since! I would really like to try them again- they are healthy, easy to serve (especially since I'll be packing a lunch for her starting in 2 wks for the MDO she'll be attending), and she loves fruit. Is there a magic time when her system would be more regulated or matured where the bananas would not affect her as much? Or is there a way to counteract the constipating effects (I tried giving her applesauce and/or prunes when she was constipated before, and neither really seemed to help) ?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

For more info if anyone cares- I give her applesauce all the time and she loves it with no negative side effects. She eats lots of other fruits and veggies that we offer when we are eating, and she does great with all types of foods. It's just bananas that have caused this problem. I'm not concerned that I should be feeding her solids less, and I don't believe that giving her solids is impacting her nutrition. I still breastfeed and she gets the best of both worlds here- per my pediatrician and through other medical resources I do not believe that breastmilk alone should be her primary source of nutrition. For many reasons, I want (and believe she needs) to have other sources of nutrition. I just wondered if there was a "good" or "best" time to try a food again, as I know the digestive system continues to mature. I may just wait longer, because I really don't want to go through the pain again, I just wondered if anyone had experience with reintroducing a food with success and what the timeline was on this.

Bananas are binding.
A baby's digestive system is still maturing.
Hence, constipation.
Don't give bananas anymore. Until she is older.

Nurse, on-demand. For the 1st year of life, this is imperative. Breastmilk or Formula is a baby's PRIMARY source of nutrition, not solids and not other liquids. Solids, is also not as nutritionally dense, as breastmilk or Formula.

At this age, a baby does not even have to eat solids, 3 times a day.
Just once is fine.

Do not give anymore bananas until she is older.

Do not use suppositories. This is per our Ped.

Probiotics and plums. Not purees or prunes, but the actual fresh plum fruit. At that age I cut the plum up into tiny pieces. He was able to start picking them up by then, but mostly I had to feed the pieces to him. That's the only way my son can eat bananas, even now.

Unfortunately bananas have that 'bung you up' effect. You could try adding pureed prunes to a mushed up banana but otherwise I would try to stay away from them while she is so young
Good Luck

I read just earlier today that if bananas aren't very ripe, they can cause constipation. I'd try very small amounts of really ripe banana. Maybe that'll help. If not, she'll be okay without them until she's older. I really wouldn't recommend suppositories either, or juice, considering it's nothing but concentrated sugar! Try pureed prunes or even fresh plums. Good luck. Oh, and woo hoo for you nursing past 6 months! You go momma (:

My little 9 mo old boy is very prone to being constipated as well.....so we try and stay away from the BRAT foods i.e. Banana, Rice, Apple and Toast. He loves Banana and Apple sauce so this is what works for us - we have half a banana mixed with blue berries, oatmeal cereal and formula (you could do breastmilk) for breakfast for some reason mornings are better for bananas......we just avoid applesauce unless we have diaherrea (sp?). instead of apple sauce I cut small pieces of apple and freeze. I then thaw one piece at dinner time and put it in this net thingy that he can suck on. We also do 1 tsp of gripe water a day which really helps with digestion.Hope this helps!

Frankly, I'd skip the bananas. It's not worth it. I know they are convenient and healthy and ever so tasty. Try blueberries as they are one of the least reactive/alergic foods on earth. Full of good things your baby needs, including fiber. They are awesome for digestion. Don't be alarmed by blueish poop if you do give her blueberries. My boy's school actually called me one day because of his blueish poop! LOL.

Also, if she does get constipated try apple juice, straight. The high concentration of sugar in the juice pulls water into the lower intestine, which is where the fecal matter dries up prior to being eliminated, and keeps things soft and moving.

Good luck.

I would give it another try at 1 year and then maybe every 3 months thereafter. Until then, just skip em.
