My son is 7 weeks old and unfortunately I have changed his formula several times trying to find the right one. He started on Similac Advance, which seemed okay, but then I decided to try Enfamil Gentlease. He did not respond well to that at all. He was spitting up all the time and he had this rash on his face plus a runny nose, so I switched him to Enfamil Prosobee now he is really constipated (hard balls of stool), but his face has cleared up and the spitting up and other symptoms have stopped. Should I leave him on this formula or just see if he will adjust to it after some more time?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, it's been about 2 weeks since I put my son on the Prosobee formula and I think this is going to be okay for him. His stools are starting to soften up and he is having bowel movements more frequently now. The ecessive spitting up has stopped and he seems much happier now. So, thank you all for your advice!

Since Similac Advance seemed OK, I'd go back to that and leave him on that for at least 3 weeks. Changing formulas does not allow for enough time for his body to adjust. He's been on 3 formulas in 7 weeks. That's an average of a different formula every 2 weeks. His system may not even know what to do anymore. You do not want him to be constipated.

Also keep in mind that some of these symptoms may not be related to the formula. A runny nose can be just a runny nose. A rash can be caused by things other than formula such as laundry detergent, fabrics perfumes, lotions, etc. And, many babies just have a rash from time to time. And spitting up can be caused by having his tummy too full or needing to burp, or lying down too son after eating.

I strongly urge you to go back to the formula that seemed to work and stay with it for at least 3 weeks. If he spits up, try different ways of holding him while feeding him, being sure to burp him more than once, and keeping him more upright for 15 or so minutes after feeding him.

Prosobee is a soy based formula. Do you have reason to believe that he's allergic to milk protein? If so have his pediatrician test for that allergy. I would not put him on a soy formula if he doesn't need it for a number of reasons. First of which is that babies are just as often allergic to soy as they are to milk. And soy contains hormones that may be not so good for your baby.

Relactate. You won't have so much trouble since it's made especially for him.

Are you discussing this with your pediatrician? Changing up his food frequently could cause long term problems.

How long has he been on the prosobee. I guess, to give him at least 2 -3 weeks on that. Have you ever tried probiotics? I don't think you should keep him on that daily, but for a few days to help get beyond the constipation. It comes as powder for infants and children. You can add it to his bottles. Directions will come on the bottle. You should be able to find it at a natural foods stoor. Otherwise, you said similace seemed to be fine for him, maybe just try switching back to that. I'm so sorry, it is very stressful isn't it?

good luck,
