my 9 week old is eating ALL DAY LONG.. this has been going on for about 3 weeks now, he was preemie, born at 35 weeks, and i know to go by his "adjusted age" but GEEEEZ, i nurse as much as i can take it, (10 mins or so on each breast) and then offer a 4 oz bottle, he sucks that down too.. and still wanting MORE MORE MORE.. rooting and chewing on his hand.* pacifiers only work for so long, he spits it out within 1 minute* and i like gripe water, but i don't want to over use it, wont they build up a tolerance for it???

HELP, i think he also has BAD gas pains keeping him from staying asleep, peeeeeeew! i tried Mylocin drops and they dont really help, i try the moving the knees up to his tummy, that hardly helps.. any other suggestions.. i know..eliminate milk, dairy products... but anything else you can suggest!? he just doesn't like to go to sleep, always hungry =(

What can I do next?

Maybe try a pacifier, he may just need to suck on something, and may not be hungry. I know it can be annoying, but the fact that he is eating a lot is a great sign, he will be a healthy kid! His little body may just be trying to catch up and he needs the extra nutrients.
As far as the gas pains go, I've heard a lot of really good things about Gripe Water, (it is similar to Mylicon) you can buy it at Babies R' Us, and I think Wallgreens.
I would also suggest talking to your ped. they usually have good insight on these topics, and know what is normal.

Good luck and congratulations on your new baby!

I'm not breastfeeding any longer but the LC had me bf each baby (I have twins) for 30 minutes,,, maybe you're not giving it enough time.

Jennifer,

As annoying as it is that he's eating so much and so often, your son is growing! When my 4 1/2 year old son was nursing there were times where he'd have marathon feedings, usually before bed. These feedings would last for anywhere between 1 and 3 hours where he'd nurse non-stop going back and forth from side to side. That was draining (no pun intended) on me.

For the gas problems, have you tried laying him on his stomach across your knees and patting his back? That helped my daughter when she was super fussy a few times.

Hope this helps,
Melissa

Olivia couldn't keep a pacifier in by herself at 9 weeks, you may have to try holding it in for him, see if he will keep it in longer that way, and make sure you're trying different binkies, he may prefer one shape over another.

If he's gassy, try tipping him almost upside down while cradling him in your arms before burping him. Amelia wouldn't burp at all unless we did this, makes the bubbles rise. And keep up the chiropractic, it took three visits for Olivia to sleep better! Forgot if I already told you these things! So glad you joined!
