Feeding a 6 Week Old Baby

My granddaughter is 6 weeks old. The doctor has her parents feeding her with only 2 ounces of formula per feeding. She always seems to be hungry when she finishes the two ounces. Is that what other doctors are recommending for newborns? It has been many years since I had babies, but I seem to remember feeding them 4 ounces rather than 2.

What can I do next?

She should be allowed to eat until full and on demand. I never counted the number of oz my kids drank. They were breast fed and formula fed. However, I would always offer up 4 oz or so and when they pushed the bottle away they were done. People become consumed with my kid eats this much or that much. Let her eat until she's full. When she's done she'll stop. Don't count oz's every child is different and so are their nutrional needs.

When my daughter was born, the nurses in the hospital chastised us for feeding her too much. We mentioned this to our pediatrician before we even left the hospital and she told us that we were to feed her until she (our daughter) "told" us she was full. By 6 weeks, she was having between 5 and 6 ounces per feeding.

Good luck!

My daughter at that age drank between 2 1/2 ounces to sometimes 4 ounces!! She will stop eating when shes full. 2 ounces sounds like too little to me as well. Is there a medical reason she is being fed so little? If not I think you can give her one or one and a half more ounces and see how she does with that. Good luck and congrats!!!

I have a 6 week old boy and if he only had 2 oz's he would be very hungry. I pump and bottle my breastmilk and I also give him formula at night and he has no less than 3 1/2 and with him having a growth spurt this week it has been all the way up to 5 oz a feeding (which is every 2 hours!!!) I hope this helps a little. I would have them double check with the ped. Good luck to you!!!!

Through my son's first year whenever we thought he should be drinking more we would start making him a bottle 2oz larger than we had been giving him. If after a week he was consistantly leaving 2oz in the bottle then we'd go back to what we were giving him until we thought it was time to upgrade again.

We tried not to waste formula, but we let him dictate how much he wanted. Babies can't "pig out" - they will only eat what they need.
