My 7 week old daughter has gone from finishing 6oz bottles to barely finishing three ounces. She has been sleeping more than usual today as well. She has also slept through four of the last five nights. when she wakes up (around 5:30AM) she has a small bottle then goes back to sleep until 9:00AM. She plays in her play gym a great deal while awake, and is extremely tactile. She already grabs and clutches to everything within her reach while in her play gym. She has the sniffles, but is not running a fever. She has had adequate wet, and BM diapers. Should I be concerned about the increased sleep, and decreased appetite?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We called the pediatrician, and they asked us to come in for a visit. We left with the title of Super Mommy and Super Baby. She is a little stuffy, but he said it is nothing to be concerned about. She has gained a whopping 2+ lbs and grown almost a full inch in 3 weeks. So, as it turns out, Ci Ci (her very loving and over protective grandmother) was just making Mommy a Nervous Nellie. Thank you for all of your helpful comments. We are all a bit nervous as my 7 year old nephew was just released after 15 days in the P-ICU of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh with severe bacterial pneumonia.

How long has she been eating less? You can always take babies into your pediatrician's office to get a weight check. Mine didn't require an appt, it was just a quick walk in for exactly this kind of thing. Maybe you could take her in tomorrow to compare with her last weight, and then take her in a few more days or a week or so. And keep track of the wet and dirty diapers, on a piece of paper would be good.

That is all just to be watchful. If she alert and happy this could just have to do with a growth spurt. My son has always had crazy growth spurt cycles, from the beginning. He would eat a TON, then he would stop eating so much and I would start to worry and he would sleep a lot, and as soon as he would slow down on the eating and sleep extra, I would notice his clothes not fitting or that he'd gone up a diaper size. Almost overnight. After a few days of not eating things would go back to normal and he'd eat a regular amount until the next growth spurt started. I felt like I was always on a nursing rollercoaster because I wouldn't be keeping up with him, then right as my milk supply would catch up to his demand, he'd slow down and I'd be miserable and huge. My son is 2 1/2 now and he still does this. Two weeks ago he was eating me out of house and home, now today I couldn't get him to eat a fraction of his usual amount.

I would just keep an eye on her symptoms and how much she weighs. You can put a call into the nurse at the doctors office too and tell them what is going on. They can advise you how long this should go on before you should be worried. I always call mine with questions like that.

Well, kids that young don't usually get sick. I wouldn't worry too much right now, she might just be really tired today, but if the pattern continues I would call your doctor. She should be sleeping quite a bit still, so I wouldn't be concerned about that and the doctor will just ask if she is still having wet diapers, like you mentioned, so keep an eye out for changes there. It's probably just a little bump in her road! Hang in there!

She may just be going through a growth spurt and her sniffles might just be allergies. My four month old has been congested almost from day one. He never runs a fever or acts sick, I think he just has a touch of allergies(his ped thinks so too), so that could also be what 's wrong with your daughter. When they grow they sleep alot so they don't have a chance to eat much. I wouldn't worry.

I think she sounds okay and you should not be concerned. My son was only drinking 3 ounces at a time at this age so I don't think she is out of the norm at all. If you are overly concerned maybe a nurse at your Pediatrician's office can assure you.

Sounds 100% normal to me. Children will go through phases dependent on their growing. Congratulations on her!

There is a growth spurt at about 6 weeks and she may be going through that. If her diapers are in line, and she seems happy, the pediatrician is probably going to tell you not to worry... but you can always call anyway.

One of the hardest things about having babies that young is that just when you think you have it figured out, it changes. As long as there is no fever, she is awake and active a good bit of the day, and she is having adequate diapers, I'd say enjoy the rest. It won't last forever! ;-)

There is a growth spurt around 6 or 8 weeks, so I think the larger feedings and now the extra sleep is related to that. Babies will eat a lot more and sleep a lot more when they are going through growth spurts. When my daughter was that age, she never ate 6 oz at a feeding! 3-4 oz per feeding sounds about right.
