I am in the process of re-planting around the tree in front of my house (between the sidewalk and street) and am interested in what some of your favorite sun annuals are. Close by this area I will be planting impatiens in front of the house and wave petunias around my mailbox. Thanks for your ideas!

I've always had really good luck with "moss roses" (portulaca-- google it).

Marigolds are a delightful scented flower with true color that will make your boarder pop with color. They come in several shades. Day lylies grow fast and spread great. They are tall and the marigolds are short. Both very hardy.

You've got some great responses already. I would add that the day lilies aren't annuals, but they are super easy and can be split every couple of years. Coleus is considered a shade plant, but it can usually take a fair amount of sun and adds great color. Have fun!

dianthus work very well in the heat of summer, & if planted in the ground....will actually come back better next year. It's one of my favorites....& my Mom's!

I usually use a combo of color, because I am a color-freak. I combine hot colors (orange dazzler impatiens) & pom-pom marigolds with the pinks & purples of begonias, dianthus, & petunias. The contrast of orange/yellow with pink/purple works very well together. Occasionally I mix in some white allysum or my personal fav...deep blue/purple lobelia.

After many years of planting, I have found that annuals work much better if you group 2 or 3 plants together. You get a bigger bang for your buck & a much quicker overall effect!
