I would make up a "Movie Night" basket. Boxes of "movie candy" from the dollar store, microwave popcorn and 2 DVD's that are family friendly. (RV, Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda, Iron Man, etc. - - even 16 years olds like these.)
Hello Mamas-
My Mom called me with a question today so I decided to pick all of the creative and wonderful mamas' brains. I am never disappointed with how willing to help everyone is. So this is our question. My parents' neighbors are close family friends. We have watched all their kids grow up. My Mom is trying to cut down this year on how much spending she is doing and would like to get one family gift for all 3 kids. The problem is they are 6, 13, and 16 years old. The two oldest are boys and the youngest is a girl. Any ideas that would cost $50 or less? Thanks in advance for any advice!
Thanks so much for all the responses! She went with the popcorn maker and popcorn to go with it. She loved the idea and the kids loved it too! Went over very well:) Thanks so much!!

How about doing up a basket like a movie night, with popcorn and a gift cert to the local movie store. It is a nice family gift and it is a nice thing that the whole family can sit down and enjoy with out worry to much about the age. Or maybe movie passes to the thearter.
I think they all would like a old fashioned popcorn machine!! $32.00 at walmart. You can buy different salts and butters. They can all enjoy popcorn with friends, movie nights or by themselves! Plus the machine is fun to watch!
Hmm, this is a tough one. Maybe something like a pizza making kit. They could have a family night and everyone make their own flavor of pizza. It includes pizza crusts and sauce, and different types of cheeses and toppings. I've seen them sold with cute pizza style plates too.
Or maybe a family tree type kit. They make big pictures of a family tree chart that you can fill in the blanks and it comes with a matching frame to use when you're finished.
Good luck!
How about a really cool puzzle? the Bits and Pieces catalog has puzzles that you can rig with tiny lights or even "mystery" puzzles where you have to solve the clues in the picture and submit a solution to win a prize. They have puzzles that look like huge clocks that you can add clock hands to and hang up - it would something all the kids could work on together over the winter, and should be between $30-$50.
see if they do gameboy and get a cartridge for each.
Pajama's - everyone loves fuzzy pj's maybe with slippers.
Hi Ali!
Last year, my aunt was looking for something inexpensive to give my kids because she is on a tight budget. I suggested movie gift cards! Everyone loves to go to the movies, no matter what age! If she puts $10 on each card, that will pay for a movies and some snacks at the snack bar. My kids loved it! She actually got all of us one, and we went to a family movie one afternoon on Christmas break. It was great!
We were just at a family gathering over Thanksgiving. People from 6-70 were playing Apples to Apples together. Its a fun game that encourages discusion about answers and the whole family enjoyed it. There's several versions for younger players too. I just picked up a game on Black Friday for $13, but they are usually around $25.00.
How about movie tickets? Some times you can get package deals for Christmas that include a drink and popcorn, too.
What about a Wii game or a Playstation game? depending on if they have one of those systems? I have a 6,13,15,and 16 year olds....all of them will play a Wii game together. Or, again...the movie theatre tickets/gift cards are a great idea, it is so expensive for a family to go to the movies these days.
How about a gift certificate to a sports place- that has video games and mini-golf and go-carts,etc.?
You have already received many good ideas. Another fun game is called "Dutch Blitz". It is a card game that can be played with as few as two people or as many as eight (if played in teams).
I would get a Popcorn bucket (like you get at the movies) put some popcorn (unpopped of course ) movie size candies and some movie theater tickets. They can each go to the movies seperate or see a movie all together. I have done this a few times for my daughters friends birthday gifts the kids love it.
For our neighbors my grandmother puts a movie night basket together. She would get a good new family movie, a christmas tub of popcorn, and some other snacks. We always got some family games and host a game night. Hope these ideas help. Enjoy the holiday
How about movie gift certificates?
You can't go wrong with food...a basket of goodies?
What about some games the whole family can play - Cranium games, Scene It games, etc.
Or what about a movie basket filled with snacks and a few movies? Favorites in my extended family (oldest nephew being 12, youngest niece is an infant) include "Cheaper by the Dozen", "High School Musical", "Shrek", "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids", "Yours, Mine and Ours", "The Muppet Movie", "Annie", "The Music Man" - movies about families and musicals seem to have the widest appeal among the nieces and nephews.
As already suggested, gift cards or passes to a local venue are nice.
Sometimes a family day pass for a local zoo, museum, or Science center is nice. Each member finds things to enjoy, and they get to spend time together. We buy an annual membership to a place like this every couple years, and enjoy it all year round.
Are you close to Pittsburgh? What about a family membership to the Pittsburgh Science Center ($130 gets 2 adults, 4 kids and a caregiver PER trip all year) or Pittsburgh Zoo($70 for all kids, parents for the year!)? Other zoo plans available. Also, I think you can do a "mini" package with the Pirates so the could head over to a game at PNC Park in the spring!
movie gift card - family pack?
game like uno attack or speed uno
if they have a wii/playstation/xbox video game maybe a tape?
Maybe a gift card to the movies or bowling alley. Or if there is a family fun center near you. That's always a good idea.
I had this problem last year at Christmas - I decided on a "Movie Pack" - I went and bought gift cards to Blockbuster, movie candy (the kind you can buy in a box), and microwave popcorn. It went over wonderfully, it is a perfect way for the family to get some time together. You could even add in a gift card for a pizza, or other main dish, there are endless possibilities for this type of gift. Good Luck!!
How about a membership to a local museum. The whole family can enjoy the programming year round and even older kids love museums - if the right museum is chosen. Find one that is not too far from the family home.
Good Luck!
