Fake Tan on a 14 Year Old Girl

A little background first...I'm actually my hubby's 3rd wife. His second was the only mom my SD ever knew, so she is still Mom, even though sd lives with us full time. Well, "Mom" runs a catering business, and had my SD helped out last Saturday. She decided instead of paying her, she want's to get her a spray tan before 8th grade promotion. Luckily, she asked Dad instead of just doing it, but Dad said to let him think about it. My question is, what do you mamma's think? Would you let your 14 year old get a spray tan? What are the pros and cons? I've never had one, but always thought people looked like oompa loompas with them. My SD is very very pale, with very sensitive skin, so I'm just concerned.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the feedback mama's! I really don't know much about how spray tans work, that's why I decided to ask the question. I think my SD would love to have a spray tan, and it wouldn't surprise me if she were the one who broached the subject with her mom. Especially if she can find a way to spend more time with her mom, she would be all for it. Mom moved to North Kansas City last year, which is about an hour and a half north of us, so they don't see each other very much any more. Ultimately, it's Dad's decision, but he knew even less than me about it. lol I will just provide the pros and cons as I see them, and support whatever his decision is.

I think its great that permission was asked, unlike the grandma getting the bellbutton pierced in yesterdays posts ;)
I think 14 is an ok age for the tan for graduation.
I'm impressed she isnt trying to take her to the tan booth, I would say "no" to that.

We used to tan around 17/18 ish when i was little. In the beds. My kids are 15 and 16. They use the jergens tan lotion. It seems that kids are concerned about their tan much younger now. As long as it is spray or lotion, i am fine. The things that us girls will do to feel pretty :)

I hate all forms of faking a tan...

BUT, I am aware that there are different levels of how tan a spray tan you can get, also, it only lasts a few days. So, IF you all are going to let her do it, have her get a light tan, and keep in mind it only lasts for a short time.

I personally don't like that form of payment. Not my style at all! My problem wouldn't exactly be the spray tan itself, but the fact that that is how she is getting "paid". Has the 14 year old wanted a tan? OR, did her mom choose it BECAUSE she's pale? THAT would bother me, and at 14, what girl isn't already in an awkward place? I hope her mom isn't making her feel insecure of her natural self...

If she wants to do it, let her do it.

When I was in 8th grade, girls coated themselves with baby oil and sprayed Sun-In in their hair and laid outside for hours and used fake tanner so they could be tan and blond! Really - most people just ended up being orange.

If she wants to look like an Oompa Loompa, let her. There will probably plenty of other 8th graders that look just like that.

What does your SD want? When I was 14 I would rather have had the money. That being said if your SD wants the tan, than why not? It's her skin. It will come off. It should be her choice.

I have a 17 1/2 yr old and they routinely get spray tans for cheerleading competitions, prom, homecoming, etc.

I really don't see anything wrong with it... It sure beats the tanning bed and direct sunlight.

The spray tans now do not make you turn orange.. some are very natural looking.

It is nice that she asked your opinion!

Why on earth wouldn't you let her? What's the big deal about a spray tan? It's certainly much better for her than going out and baking herself in the sun! If she goes to a good place, it will look good, but some of them do have an orange-ish tint to them, but hey -she'll know after doing it once if she likes them or not! If she has an allergic reaction, she'll get over it and know to stay away from it in the future.

I think that if done tastefully and right, and very light, it's fine. My husband had it done before our wedding and it was kind of orange-y but I've seen many women and teens have it done before going on vacation or for a special occasion and it looks nice and natural. The goal is to have just a hint of color, not to look like she's wearing a coat of paint.

i think spray tans are silly, and if i were 14 i'd be way bummed about getting 'paid' with that instead of a manicure or some cash. but if it's what she wants, what's the problem? everyone asked you and dad first, so it's not like you've been disrespected.
if it were a tanning bed session i'd be throwing on the brakes, but really, what's the harm in a spray tan if it's a good brand?

Spray tans have really improved from earlier days and it is so much better than frying and burning like I did in my young days on Southern California beaches.

How nice that she asked her dad....too bad mom didn't pay her for the work and gift the spray tan.

I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a spray tan. It's better than a tanning bed. But, they can look a little orange on someone with really pale skin. I am very pale and I did it once (about 8 years ago, so maybe it has changed by now) and I looked so silly! I was really orange and I hated it. I do tan naturally in the summer, so I am just going to stick with the real thing from the sun, but if she is ok with getting it instead of being paid, then I would say ok. I would let my daughter do it if she wanted when she is older (she is 7 now)

Ask for a small spot that isn't seen with normal clothes be sprayed first, in order to make sure that she isn't allergic to it. And if she is being "paid" for her work with it, I think that's just fine. It is temporary, and she's not spending money to get it.

Maybe she will look like an oompa loompa, but SHE needs to decide she looks silly like that. She won't believe it if you tell her. And truly, kids at school will let her know if she looks ridiculous. THAT is what she will listen to.

Why? I would ask her why she thinks she needs it and decide based on that. If she just wants time with Mom, then maybe suggest they do lunch instead. I don't think kids need fake tans or fake nails or bleached teeth, but sometimes it's hard to convince them otherwise. I would rather a fake tan than a real one from a tanning bed.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. I have two daughters but they are younger. I guess I'm wondering why an 8th grader feels she needs a spray tan. Maybe I forget what 8th grade was like but I don't remember being interested in such things at that age (though I think I was a sort of late bloomer). I can't say if I'm for or against it because I wouldn't have a good reason either way, so I'll say it depends on your daughter. Does she get good grades? Is she boy crazy? What's her motivation for wanting a spray tan? If it's to spend time with her 'Mom', then I guess encourage her Dad to let her do it. But if he's not comfortable with it (and I don't think my husband would be), then he shouldn't feel guilty saying no and telling his daughter why.

Spray tanning is the safest way to tan. Especially if she is a pale person. I have gone to Venetian Tan and have gotten several and love them. I also have friends who have gone to Celcius with great results. Not orange like the Umpa Lumpa's. There are different levels of dark she can go too. She just needs to make sure she doesn't have any activity afterwards because you can't sweat or shower for 8 hours. Or get wet in the rain. It is much safer than the bulb tanning (which I love too) for her age. I would definately let my girls spray tan if they asked, but they would have to pay themselves...they are teens. I hope her dad lets her do this. Venetian Tan has a person actually spray you and they get all the areas...you just need a two peice suit on. Not sure what Celcius does, I think they have a person spray you and a booth sprayer too. I personally like the person spraying me...that way you are even. I hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless.

My DD has very sensitive skin too, with a history of rashes and allergies, so of course I would be concerned if that was safe for her personally. But even if she didn't have those issues, I wouldn't buy that for her. If I owed my DD money for work done, I would pay her the money and let her make the decision on how to spend it. Personally, I think the whole spray tan seems frivolous. I wouldn't forbid it IF she paid for it herself, but I wouldn't encourage it. I think my DD could come up with many other things that would be a better use of her money.
