What age if you allowed, would you let your girls get nails? I've already done that. Girl almost 17 . Just for fun!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Great answers! And by the way she has her own job and I've only paid for homecoming. And no her priories are not mixed up as she is a straight A student who is responsible and has job.. She never got the belly button piercing or the tanning again I was asking for opinions on that which is what this site is for.

Binky:

This is for the same child who wants a tanning membership?

Does she know how much the upkeep on acrylic or gel nails are? Can she afford that?

She's almost an adult. If this is something she "wants" then she should pay for it herself. If she can't - then she should wait until she can afford it.

Good luck!

My daughter (16 at the time) had them once because "everyone had them, it was homecoming time and they would be so pretty, blah blah".

She was a cheerleader at the time and she was witness to a Varsity cheerleader who had contracted some sort of ugly virus from the nail salon and her hands were horrid. It looked like her hands had been dipped in some sort of acid. It took MONTHS of medications, etc for that girl to get normal looking hands again. She was horrified with embarrassment. It was some sort of hard to deal with fungal inflammation due to tools that weren't as clean as they should have been in this very upscale salon.

My daughter got her fakes taken off and has never set foot in a salon again.. We do our own nails.

I had them once years ago and they ruin your natural nails. Plus, I didn't like the fake look.

For a special occasion, like senior prom - maybe. I've only had them once, for my wedding, and they were so uncomfortable! (That was 20 years ago, I'm in my 40s too.) Never again. Glad she had fun, though. I agree, if she has to pay for them herself it's a new ball game. ;-)

It's spring break for us and I just let my 7 yo put on those press on nails for kids. She is L. them! But I wouldn't let her wear them to school or other functions. It's just for fun and I'm sure they will fall off soon.

I had mine done twice - once for my own wedding and once when I stood up for my sister's wedding. I think they look fake and don't like the time and money to keep them up. Why can't your daughter take care of her own nails with polish? They even have french-style kits that turn out looking very nice.

I say if she can afford it and drive herself to the place to get it done.

It seems like between the belly button ring, fake tanning and fake nails, your 17 yo daughter has her priorities mixed up. She should get a job to pay for all these vanity items, instead of an allowance from you.

I would probably discourge my daughter from ever getting fake nails and I wouldn't pay for them. I don't like them and they harbour bacteria - that is why nurses aren't suppose to wear them.

I wouldn't get fake nails *for fun* because you either have to keep getting them filled in, or you have to RIP them off and they damage your nails.

So, I only wore acrylic nails when I was planning on having them long-term.

So, then my answer would be when she can afford the up-keep. So, she would have to have some sort of regular income and a way to get herself to the salon.

I would say that would typically be an adult - as in graduated from college, has her own place and her own career.

Acrylic nails are a luxury. They are not a "standard" personal care item.

I'm 42 and I've never had fake nails. I don't understand the point of fake nails. I have my own nails, if I want them long I just let them grow! I don't have girls, but if I did I would teach them not to waste money on something so foolish.

Tell her to buy her own stick on nails, from a grocery store.
Ya know, the kind that are like stickers.

I started wearing press on nails when I was about 9 or 10 years old but I didn't get my first set of salon acrylics until I was 19 (I'm now 24). They can be expensive; I get the pink and white solar nails and they are $30 for a full set and $27 for refills. I have a job so I pay for them once a month. The cost depends on which place you go to. They can mess up your nails, especially if they're ripped off instead of soaked off with acetone polish remover. My nails last about 4 weeks until they need filled. They usually need to be taken off and redone about every 6 months.
