"Fake" Coughing in 6-9 Month Old

My son is "fake" coughing along with real coughing. It seems he is doing this just because he can. We try not to give it too much attention, so as not to encourage it. But it is so obvious he is faking. Has anyone experienced this? I know there is nothing I can do and that it is just a phase, but I just wanted to know if this is unusual or not. Thanks Mamas!

So What Happened?

Thanks Mamas for your reponses. I figured it was ok and normal, but it's always nice to be reassured by other Moms. everyone have a great day!!

Once they find that they can do something, they like to hear themselves doing it. There is nothing wrong with him, he is just doing what babies do. I would not call it faking a cough. I would call it practice, he is just having fun with a new found skill.

My daughter went through the "fake" coughing stage for a few weeks when she was that age. She grew bored with it and has since moved on to other um.."beautiful" noises. Your son is just trying out his new skills :)

I remember that all to well. lol with my daughter she did that for awhile then all of a sudden she actually started to giggle. but just wait till he is a year old and screams for an hour or more all because he doesn't want to go to bed. just remember they don't stay that little for long and before you know it you can't keep them in one place unless they are strapped down. (only time my daughter sits is in the car or in her highchair)

Just saying the same as the others. It's just something new he has learned to do. I agree with Amber just wait for the screaming stage..it's a blast ;) I do miss these stages though! Glad to hear he is doing wonderfully!

Yep, this is normal. They like to make noises just because they can make them. They like practicing over and over. Just wait for the screaming phase. :)

My son is almost eight months and does that too! He thinks its hilarious because everytime he does it I ask him if hes ok and he cracks up laughing. The doc said it was normal too. They are smart little stinkers!

You can never give too much attention on anything for these little guys, thats how they learn. "fake cough" maybe he's telling you he would like more of your attention. Besides, the next thing they do is drop things so it makes a big noise, and you pick it up. It's okay if mommy is a little bit of a puppet at first, besides by the time they hit 18 months, it's down hill from there. The next time you see that sweetness is when they turn 4. I say 18 months to 4 is like 13- 18.
