Face Painting for Community BBQ

Hi Everyone. We do an annual local community BBQ. Last year I started including kids activities in the event. It was a lot of fun and people were able to stay longer since there kids were having a blast. We had blow up jumpers, a hay maze, a cake walk (which was very hard with all different ages so not sure if we will do that again) and kids sprinklers. I ran out of time last year but really want to do face painting this year. Just wondering if anyone one knows of good products to use and best place to buy face paints. Any other ideas for activities would be great. I want to be able to include all ages. There is usually about 30 kids, hopefully more this year. Thanks!!

I think crayolas water color pencils would be great and easy. you just have dip them like a paint brush and paint away! I used to paint my face in high school with a little star or flower high on my cheek. I just used watercolors. stayed on well and washed off easily.
Happy painting:)

I do face painting and I would not reccomend using any product that is not designed specifically for face painting, even if it is non toxic it can still cause problems on the skin. I would reccomend going to Disguises in Lakewood. They have a large selection of face paint as well as glitter and tatoos. Good Luck.

When I taught kindergarten, we just used regular poster paint - the kind that you buy at Utah/Idaho Supply or other school supply stores (I don't remember the brand name). It washed off easily and was easy to use.

Hi Stacy- what a coincidence- I'm planning face painting for my daughter's birthday this weekend and just called all over for it last week! Party city in westminster (in the same complex as babies r us) has face paint. They were out of the crayon kind but had the little jars of it. The bigger Michael's have a kit which I didn't check out. Target doesn't have any. I called a few other places that I can't remember now- but party city seemed to have the most locally. I didn't leave myself enough time to order online but I'm sure you could find it cheaper there if you are more organized than I am :) Have fun!

Some other ideas that kids love, but are easy to set up are races, have them try to carry a golf ball on a spoon(less mess than eggs), three legged race, potato sack race, just a line for beginning and ending and letting them run. If you want something new for them you can try using hula hoops and letting them roll them up or down a hill.
Have fun.

I did this for my daughters second birthday.
I went to a party store/costume store and they have kid friendly face paints especially made for situations like this. The kids loved it, it was so much fun!

Do a water balloon toss too, that is always fun.
Or get squirt guns and line up empty soda cans and see who can knock one over with their squirt gun water the fastest.

I've never actually done face painting but I've used stage makeup from Ben Nye... I think that would be the best brand to use. Try your local party supply store or wherever you can rent costumes from in your town. If you can't get it there you can order it online if time permits. Good luck!

Michael's and Hobby Lobby should both have face paints and an even better alternative is Little Richard's downtown on Tejon-you can call first but I am willing to bet that they'd carry them and they are a way groovy locally owned store-there is a website-just type in Poor Richard's + Colorado Springs.

Klutz Press used to have a little book on face painting complete with paints...may be Borders or Barnes and Noble would have it? Or something similar? Have fun!

What fun!!! Fishing booths usually go over well with all ages, too. There are places (oriental trading company, for example) where you can buy things like bubbles, fun pencils, etc in bulk really inexpensively. Parents or siblings can help the really little ones out if they are too young to hold the "fishing pole".

Stacy,

At our annual Elementary School's get together, the teachers use colored pencils!! Apparently, and I watched, if you get them wet, then color on the skin, it works pretty good. Non-toxic, and EASY to wash off. Try it at home before of course!

OUr school does face painting during their field day. I'm not sure what kind of paints they used but they made foam stamps with a variety of things like hearts butterflies, local sports team names, etc. That way the kids could choose from the stamps and those doing the painting didn't have to be expert painters. They did have a couple moms that did do freehand stuff if their was a special request, but just thought this idea might help your face painting booth go more smoothly.
