Extreme Wakefulness in Almost 1 Year Old - Could It Be Allergy or Just Teething?

My son will turn 1 in a week and for the last week has slept horribly at night. He is napping as usual, but at night he will begin to wake after about 4-5 hours of sleep and then every 1/2 hour to 1 hour after that until morning. He cries, sometimes just for a second or two and sometimes for 5-10 minutes, but never sits up. He just rolls around like he is uncomfortable and does whiny crying. We usually just check on him to make sure he's not visibly hurting or has a dirty diaper and then let him cry it out. We never pick him up and he usually doesn't even see us come in. Although he won't let us look at his gums, his daycare provider thinks his molars are coming in and I can see a little white back there. But we also just started whole milk about 2 weeks ago and I'm wondering if it could be allergy related, although he has no rashes, no diarrhea, and is perfectly happy during the day while he plays. Any suggestions? Could teething really make sleep THIS awful?

Forgot to add that we had him checked for an ear infection 2 days ago and all was clear. Last night was a little better, but he's still waking a lot.

What can I do next?

My son is fifteen months and he went through the same thing. It was his teeth. I am also a Daycare provider and I have a little girl 14 months and she is doing the same thing right now. It will pass once all the teeth come through. Sorry!

M. T ~ I have a little boy that is 11 months and teething like crazy. He's doing the same thing, waking after 4-5 hours, tossing and turning, crying out but not really waking up. About a week or two before a new tooth pops out this happens. Then as soon as the tooth is out he's sleeping through the night again. I don't know if this happens with all babies but his dad and I are getting little sleep when a new tooth comes out and it sounds just like what you are going through now. We've been using the teething tablets at night and they work pretty good. If he's still crying or whimpering we'll use the night time oragel and put it all the way to the back of his gums. It's been working for the last week for us and we're getting more sleep. Good luck!

I agree with those who mentioned the ear infection. Sometimes they just can be symptomless...except the night waking. My pediatrician told me that this is due to the fact that when a child is lying flat in his crib and has an ear infection, the pressure buildup in his ear is increased and painful. THat's why so many children ear infections frequently wake up crying in the middle of the night. I would definitely rule that out first. Good luck!

This is what my son did and it was an ear infection. Only crying all night but fine during the day. Teething is extremely painful, too! I'd mention it to the doc @ his one year.

i agree that it is his teeth. i know my twins were so uncomfortable with it that we gave them a dose of tylenol about 1/2 hour before bed and they were able to sleep peacefully all night long. good luck!!

My son just turned 1 March 15th and we had the same problem right before his birthday. It was his molars coming in. He had 3 coming in at once. Baby Origel was a great also a little Tylenol right before bed.

When we were just starting w/ milk we used a few gas drops in his last bottle/glass of the night and that REALLY helped. Between the teeth and gas the poor little guy was so uncomfortable he would just roll back and forth and whine/cry off and on all night.

Hope it helps out.

I was also going to say ear infection. Brandon's had 4 of them. He's a great sleeper but when he has an ear infection, he does that exact same thing at night. He went for his 1yr appt on a Tues & they checked his ears as well & he was fine. 2 days later, BAD ear infection.

Good luck!

My son is 28 months now (and getting his 2 year molars) and did when your child is doing at that age. He was a great sleeper until those teeth started coming in, and for several days at a time he was very wakeful and tearful. Once we figured it out, all it took was a dose of ibuprofen before bed, and he slept like a baby again. I think this did the trick because now he takes medicine like a champ--I think he knows it helped him in the past.

Hi M.

It must be a common thing because my daughter had the same problem. I am pretty sure it was just teething. We would have her checked for ear infections every time she would have these waking spells. She would get a tiny fever when she would do this, so I always thought she was sick. She wasn't though. I was told by her pediatrician that teething could cause small fevers to occur. Also teething can cause some discomfort. I would give my daughter ibuprofen for the inflammation and pain, and she would sleep fine through the night. You are lucky if this is the first problem your child is having with teething. I think my daughter was a monster for every single tooth that came in. Also, I thought allergy to milk could be the problem, but the doctor said that you would see stool problems if your child is allergic to milk. Hope everything works out for the best.

My 17 month old still does this on occasion and we have yet to figure it out. I am very interested to see some of the responses. I know he is not getting any teeth as all of them have already broken through the gum.
