Experience with Hyperthyroidism?

Hello mamas. I had a blood test a few weeks ago showing an overactive thyroid, but I'm still in referral limbo with my HMO and getting impatient for some help and info. The heart palpitations, occasional insomnia and general junky feeling (mostly emotional) are wearing thin. The internet tells me some but I'd love to hear others' experience (and reassurance?). It sounds like there can be implications for fertility, too -- at some point I'd like a second child, and don't have all the time in the world... Thanks so much for anything you might share.

What can I do next?

Hi,

I have had a thyroid problem since I was 10..(I am now 27)...take the med. everyday IN THE MORNING at the same time and hour before eating or three hours after eating and you'll be fine. Once you get preg. they will test you every month, usually your medication has to be adjusted for the hormone changes in your body but nothing serious. I have HYPO-thyroid which is an underactive thyrod, but my Mother has HYPER thyroid like you. They removed 80% of her thyroid because it was so severe, and it functioned normally for 25 years on the 20% that was left. When she was about 50 she had to start taking the same med i take to increase it's productivity. When she had all of her thyroid and it was over active she had three chidren with no problems. After it was removed she had me with no problems....

You may want to get your kids checked and suggest your siblings...of my mother and her siblings, 6 total, 3 had a thyroid issue...of my mothers children, 4 total, two of us have it. My daughter, now 9 gets checked every year at her physical.

Of course take care of it, but really with the advancment of medicine these days, it really is no big deal once you are on the meds or have an action plan with your doctor or endocronologist.

Hope this helps!!!

D. :)

Hi B.
I had hyperthyroidsm, went on a treatment to help regulate my thyroid productionand I was fine. After approx a year when I was ready for anoher child I had a blood test and found out I had a relapse (and yes Hyperthyriodism works as an anticopceptive).I went to my doctor and he suggested a radioactive iodine treatment which eliminates the production of the thyroid hormone after that you need to take a supplement(empty stomach wait an hour before eating) to get you to the right level(dose) and you're good to try and conceive.Once you're pregnant you'll have to check your blood and the doctor will adjust your dose and it wont affect the baby. I myself have't been able to get pregnant but it's for another reason altogether(I have a bicornious uterus and my husband and I are going to infertility specialist)
Good Luck to you and your husband.

Hi B.,
I started taking hyperthyroid medication about a year ago. Within one week, I felt better than I had in years. No more, not one, heart palpitation and happiness and energy instead of "junky" although I felt much worse than junky. I feel great now. Unlike the other person that wrote, I take mine anytime in the morning when I brush my teeth. Every situation is different.

I reckon, having read about symptoms after the blood test, that I've had this issue for about nine years. My blood was only tested a year ago because a family member has other ongoing health issues I want to avoid. The thyroid issue was a complete surprise. I'm so glad they found it. I'm happy again!

In terms of your doctors, if you're waiting to see an endocrinologist, it's well worth it as mine seemed to know a lot more about this than my regular doctor did.

I seem to recall the best web site for me was webmd. I didn't read anything about fertility (and I suspect I had hyperthyroidism well before my two children arrived). I do know that if they want to scan your thyroid, you swallow a radioactive pill and you cannot be pregnant for the procedure due to possible birth defects. I don't know how long that takes to get out of your system.

Good luck!

Hello B.,
I too have a thyroid problem, unfortuantly when I got on the medication it did not make me lose any weight =o) It took my husband and I a year to get pregnant with out daughter. After talking to my dr about my "infertility" I looked in my medicine cabinet and realized I wasn't as consistent at taking my medication as I thought I was. After consistently taking my medication and relaxing in the baby making process we found out we were pregnant.
My sister-in-law had two miscarriages and then found out she had thyroid cancer. Had her thyroid removed and after it was safe to conceive, they got pregnate with my adorable niece.
I've also recently come to the conclusion that I haven't been battling depression most of my life, I just have an out of wack thyroid. When my dosage of medication is right, all is right in the world =o)
One thing that my doctor never told me about my thyroid medication is that it leaches calcium from your body, so be sure to increase the amount of calcium you take.
My experience is that the only inconvenience of a thyroid problem is taking medication ever day and that you can't eat before or an hour after.
Best of luck,
C.

Hyperthyroidism is something that runs in my family. My older sister found out she had it a while ago. While on the medication she went on to have two children no problem. I never knew fertility was an issue. I am thinking about going to get my thyroid checked, just because it runs in the family. However, to answer your question, my sister had no problems with pregnancy.
