Excessive Spit-up

I have a 6 month old son who has never really spit up a lot. He is a very good eater and has been on babyfood for about a month now. He is very active, and was just given eye drops for pink eye. Since about the time he went on the drops he has been spitting up like crazy. Is it possible he is spitting up more from the drops or could it just be him? He has also always had a little constipation problem and per the dr we give him a litte prune juice once in a while to help. Could he be spitting up more due to being constipated? I dont think it is a allergy to his food. We have not added anything new and we introduced everything one at a time and he never had a reaction to anything. The doc said he was ready to start solids. He sits up on his own and was eating 5 to 6 oz every 2 1/2 to 3 hrs. He has been on the same formula since a month old. He was mostly formula fed as I did not have much milk and couldnt even hardly get a meal a day out. This is our first child and he is just an amazing baby. He is always happy and smiley. The spitting up does not seem to bother him at all either. Any advice would be great.

Hi, I'm the mom of a 2yr old boy. He is a very good eater also. He had his moments of spitting up and it was usually due to the cereal or food being too thick for him or he was just eating too fast. Sometimes they are just having reflux.
Don't worry, I freaked out the first he threw up all over me.
I hope this helps.

Just wondering if he started sitting on his own about the time he started the spit up. My daughter spits up anytime I feed her and then sit her up within about 30-45 minutes of eating. Their systems are just adjusting to the new motion. No matter what is causing it, it will pass 8)

Hi T.,

Another reason for the excessive spit up may be that he has a tooth cutting in. I know that with my daughter, every time she had a tooth coming in, she had an upset tummy. The teeting process would cause her to druel, and with that excess druel i think it made her tummy upset, which in turn would cause her to spit up more than normal. Also, with the excess druel, it also made her stools extreamly soft and watery.

hope that helps.

HI T.
Not sure exactly if it is related but, When my son was about 5 or 6 months, when I completely stopped breastfeeding, and went to milk, he threw up alot. I am talking projectile vomiting, It was quite scary, It took me a while to catch on, but I switched him to soy, and lactose free formula, and the same for the milk. Wow, what a difference, no more spitting up. We too have had pink eye, a few times, right now being one of those times, and although my son is a little older he has not exhibited any spitting up. Although, depending on the prescription, does the antiobiotic have sulfur in it? Sodium Sulfacet is what we have. Some children are allergic to sulfa, as my daughter is, so she is not on the drops, she is on omnicef. Does the spitting up happen right after eating? Try a lactose free or soy milk, it may just suprise you, Lactaid, or Dairy Ease, or even Silk(soymilk)or even soy formula. Good Luck

My first son spit up all the time. We went through all kinds of meds and the only thing we found that really worked was taking him to the chiropracter. I was nervous and skeptical at first but we found someone who had done a lot of work with kids and it was a huge success. It has also helped with constipation. Just a thought.

My son tended to be gassy and spit up some. He was also put on some prune juice. It turned out when I started giving him formula that he was allergic to milk. Just a thought to consider if he's a breast fed baby or has just started regular formula.

I'm wondering what kind of formula your baby is on. I remember when my kids were little, I had to put them on a different formula because they were constipated and spit up alot. After the change in formula, they were back to normal. It seems that their stomachs were a little undeveloped and couldn't process food as well as some other babies. But with the change, came digestion.

My son was also formula fed and at about 6 months he started spitting up and it escaladed to throwing up. He never seemed sick, just would let it all out. Turned out he was allergic to the formula I was giving him (soy) even though it was the kind he had been using for the past 5 months. I just switched his formula and it stopped. He's now 2 years old and has no problem with soy, just had to outgrow his allergy. Maybe its an allergy that has developed?

Hi T., I am mom of two boys, 6,5. Married 17.5 years. I had to respond to your questions. I once had pink eye myself in college, took a cream for it, had some swelling, itching made it worse. The eye cream contains SULPHA medication, which I found out I am allergic to.... as is my mom and I assume that one or both of my boys will be too. Check on the contents of the drops. If that's not it, give him sips of water throughout the day, if he's constipated he needs it. If he's spitting up, he could be dehydrated. My husband is a chiropractor and worked on our older son who had a reflux problem as a small baby. They adjust very differently on babies than adults. In fact Dr. Heather Schueler is in the detroit area and works with kids. she did her intership with my husband. Please check out the ingrediants and watch the formula too, too much can also make for constipation.
Let me know how it works out...
Been there ...

Hello T. C:

My name is K., been married 17 years and I have 3 children. I am a stay at home mom with an in-home business, but did work full-time when our eldest (14) was a baby.

It was encouraged when our youngest child was a baby (she is now 7) that it was o'k not to feed her baby food until she was 11-12 months old because babies bodies have a hard time digesting food until around 1 year of age. Your child may be having a difficult time digesting the food and thus it is being rejected. Our daughter was satisfied with 5 eight oz bottles a day with no cereal added either (which is hard to digest). It may be worth a try just to add a couple of extra bottles and just stop the food. As for the eye drops, I am not sure. But all of my children have suffered from pink eye at least once and have not experienced the problem of spitting up and constipation. Although, the constipation could be caused adversly from the food. Best wishes to you. I remember the younger years...they were a beautiful experience that did come with challenges.

T., my son wasnt much of a spitter either but when he hit a certain age he started spitting up alot but then he stopped, his Dr. said it was perfectly normal and some babies are just more of spitters then others. I woulndt think it be from the drops at all or from the prune juice. My son also has pooping issues and had to give him prunes and plumes plus when he was on a bottle kero syrup in those but he seems to be better now but it didnt effected him in spitting up. Sure it makes a mess just keep a blanket under him if you can and try to make sure he burps after eating but not much you can do Im sure its normal for your son and he will grow out of it.
Also some babies can have acid reflux I got medicine for that but never wanted to use it so I just waited it out and he grew out it I dont really remember what age. I also have a daycare here at home and have a 7 month who spits up not alot but enough and hes on whole milk and that stinks when it comes up but that kid wont stay put not much to do about that either.
So I woulndt worry to much about it, you could always ask your Dr. if that makes you feel better. Good luck! L.

Maybe consider that he might be teething. My son spits up about a week or so before a tooth breaks through. It also might be due to the congestion from the pink eye. The drainage into his stomach might be upsetting. I hope he's feeling better soon!

Pink-eye, spitting up and constipation could all be signs of food allergies. It could be a dairy allergy. Are you nursing or bottle-feeding? If nursing, you could try getting off dairy for 2 weeks and see if that helps things.

My son is almost 5 months and he seems to only spit up when he is constipated. It seems like he is working so hard to get it out that he spits up.... I don't know how helpful that is. :)

Hi T.
I was just wondering if you started a new solid. If so he may be allergic. stop it for a while and see if the spit up improves. If it does avoid that food in the future. Good Luck T.

I would call your pharmacist and find out what the side effects of the eye drops are. Pharmacist's are experts on medications. The eye drops would be my unexpert opinion :) Also ask the pharmacist if probiotics are safe for 6mo olds.
